When I first started playing ren teamers, it was a race to liberalism to take nationalism for free. Then it was gunpowder first, unless you wanted to go nationalism first to block the other team from getting the Taj Mahal. Once in a while you'll see a quick astro for a really early boat drop. Even more rarely will a team try to get early rifles. In any event, while there is more than one tech path you can follow, you just run the risk of not having cavalry while the other team does.
I agree 100% with this. I think the problem though, is that in a teamer, you really need to get a grasp on the basics before you can experiment and find a formula that works for you. Especially so in a ren (or any other advanced era) teamer -- most everyone played a lot of ancient in single player, ctons, etc.
As far as being able to watch what your teammates are doing, I think this is a good thing. The combination of observing good players and having good players comment on your gameplay is one of the best ways to learn the basics and improve.

well if you have never played civ3 there was a scenario where you had a king.. if that king was killed you lost. But in the def. world of civ4 guess there is no place for it. *chuckle* I played Civ 3 - had Armies .... don't remember a 'King' unit - certainly not a unit that held your CIV together unless it died lol. Though I use to name my 1st unit after the leader and I treated him like the 'King' in SP - heh. *edit*: Ah Scenario!!!! just registered - nope did not play the scenario - was it good? - am tempted to reload that game now lol. Are you suggesting we play scenarios in MP - is this possible? The King unit was with the regicide option enabled I believe.

Why don't we see any industrial teamers? Do they end ridiculously fast, or involve a lot more luck and double moving than skill? My favorite game music is in the industrial age... all that Brahms and Dvorak. The Industrial Era is an extremely interesting start because of the strategic resources and tech choices presented! It's too bad that if you don't know how to play Industrial and you're not very good at listening, there's an 80 or 90% chance you're going to die in the first 10 turns.

Another game we were talking about playing recently was a Renaissance teamer banning all of the popular Ren civs -- no India, France, Russia, England, Spain, or Arabia. See what people can do without the era specific unique units and the most popular trait combos. Would certainly be interesting .

More cities = more strained economy = slower research. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that land score and population count more than technology and wonders, and without the need to protect yourself not having the latest military advances is not much of a big deal.
Would be fun to try, and with teamers not being so fun lately, I'll try to host a game or two like this and give it a shot.

As I was involved in this game, I feel the need to speak out about this situation. It was a late game Ren. Teamer where every turn started with 2 minutes and 40 seconds. It was a huge military standoff points race. One of our players had to go to work, we needed these turns to end quickly, which seemed pretty possible when nobody is really attacking. However, one of our front players, who was down a city and really couldn't afford to attack, got tired of waiting for the game to end as the turns were still taking about 2 minutes each, and moved EVERYTHING out of his city except 5 Musketeers to attack. This move was not discussed amongst the team nor was it endorsed by the team.
How can you double move a culture bombed city with a stack of rifles, cannons, catapults, and cavalry? There was no element of surprise here, it was just brunt force. If I recall correctly, he moved from a forest, to another forest, to a hill, to the city, then started bombarding away that 80% defense bonus ... that's no double move.
And with the entire team in points race mode and all our front's armies on the attack, a simple counter of about 10 cavalry would have ended the game immediately as we would have lost our player, and the stack that entered your team's lands.

My two cents on the poll issue:
I would prefer to use Hamachi as a last resort when there are connection problems rather than having to deal with it every time I want to play a ladder game.

Are there any worse words to hear during a teamer than this? Just had to scrap a game 3 hours and about 70 turns into it because 2 players quit and no subs were available in the lobby. It's one thing to quit a cton, you can just report to all, but when you quit a teamer you are screwing everyone in the game. I'm a pretty reasonable guy, and if there is a good excuse for needing to leave, I am fully supportive of it. But when you start a game late at night and realize that you should probably be sleeping instead of playing Civ, that is no one's fault but your own. There is no easier way to get on my do not play list than pulling crap like this ... and some people wonder why most teamers have passwords on them? Same thing happened last night too .

That was an insanely fun game, being able to come back after being down and almost certainly out for the first 40 or 50 turns. Not sure if it was worth the over 9 hours I spent trying to play it though!
I started looking for a game at 12:45pm EST. After 2 scraps of 5v5 (which I've played a lot of and never seen this many problems before) we decide that we'd better try for 4v4 instead. It started somewhere around 3:45pm EST, all of the issues Sal described happened, and it lasted until shortly after 10:00pm EST. We didn't even play out all the turns, and the timer was moving nicely, never any lag really.

Another fun new connection issue I have experienced a few times is when a window pops up and says something along the lines of connection to server lost. I know my internet connection is fine because I am talking on TeamSpeak and nothing happens there ... so I have to get back into the lobby and hopefully get back into the game without another round of bad peers, etc.

lol. Now go read my story . You'll like it tommy. Posting ur experience on beta forum. I enjoyed Tommy's experience and was one of the few who decided to try again, so I followed up with Sal's ... I don't know if it's the patch itself, more people using the GameSpy servers because the patch is out, or just really bad luck ... but I have never seen this many problems in any ladder games I have ever played, let alone teamers with people I play with all the time.

I enjoyed the retire bug in the new patch as well during a teamer today.
Has anyone actually tested out the stackable civics bugs? I was hoping that leaving out Universal Suffrage and Free Speech was more of a typo than an indication it wasn't fixed this time around.

I lost a 99.1% battle today. It was a 2 star Knight vs. an unpromoted Longbow in the open ground. Oh well .

How about 10/12 nukes passing through sdi. WTF, future is sooo screwed up, less and less fun everytime i try. Funny thing is the night before only 1/20 nukes go through.

I think self policing is the best way to handle this situation. We all play together in teamers often enough that anyone who consistently leaves the game immediately after teams are picked will get a bad reputation. That bad reputation will make him (or her) a last resort to be invited back to future games, which is good enough for me.

I am psyched about 6 new civilizations to play as and 10 new leaders to choose from, but it is a little disappointing that they are adding third leaders for both England and Russia when there will most likely be some civs still stuck with only 1 leader.
Also, I wonder if the 2 new leader traits will be confined to the new leaders or if some of the existing leaders will be changed?

Odd, I haven't received either newsletter and I definitely have it set up to receive emails. Plus I get all the other ladder emails through my spam filter, so I don't see why this one would be flagged.
