Hello people,
I must say that I have been enjoying playing Multiplayer a great deal. I used to be a purely SP Civilization fanatic. Civilization IV has a rich set of game attributes, i.e. settings, enabling a significant variant in the way games are played out. This is accomplished by team or idividual efforts, map types, era starts, and settings that range from barbarian presence to civ relationships.
Why then are their basically only two type of games played? I know there are more variations played out but the great majority of games are Inland Sea Ancient or Renaissance starts and Inland Sea ctons. Not to mention that almost all ladder games have 'Always War' on. Hey I like building units and fighting it out too - but all the time? Surely this is not making good use of what 'Civilization' was conceived for? Where is the 'war waryness' in that?
I know allways war brings excitement, and I am knew to the CIV MP arena having only played MP for CIV and not Civ 3. But surely we can come up with different 'types' of games.
So I challenge you to design different game 'types' and post your concepts and outlines in this thread. Maybe we can at least double the 'types' played ;-).
Have fun civing.
Oh here is maybe a set of criterea to work towards:
1) Keep game interesting 2) playable within 3 to 4 hours max 3) significantly different than what is 'mostly' played 4) allow for more 'Civilization' features to be significant in gameplay
Hope we can muster some ingenious creativity here,
Arvcran.

i suggest a mod that hides your true identity for the whole game until the person playing dies... then he can see who to report to... and also at end of game reveal all players names also.. makes for a more fair ffa where there is no rank hunting.... and also u dont get to know who the backstabbers are so u have to watch ur back and some clans might gang up.. but i highly doubt it.. at least i dont mind killing my clanmate... i threw 8 nukes at my clan leader when i was in tx at the end of the game lol! then we will proabably see more ffa's going up

I've never even bothered to check ranks in the middle of a game. It's not like it's a really reliable indicator of quality.

yeah i would like to try always peace. but i guess it would be totally different tactics. wouldnt it just be a fight to get ur settlers out. spam settlers, grab as much land as possible, then develop civ when u have the land. doesnt matter if ur economy is strained really. anyway be interesting to hear what ppl think

Peace would be nice, but you'd probably have to have rules on number of cities. Just remember, the new Imperialistic trait in the upcoming expansion = faster settlers.

More cities = more strained economy = slower research. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that land score and population count more than technology and wonders, and without the need to protect yourself not having the latest military advances is not much of a big deal.
Would be fun to try, and with teamers not being so fun lately, I'll try to host a game or two like this and give it a shot.

Another game we were talking about playing recently was a Renaissance teamer banning all of the popular Ren civs -- no India, France, Russia, England, Spain, or Arabia. See what people can do without the era specific unique units and the most popular trait combos. Would certainly be interesting .

Would certainly be interesting . i like to take turns and assign civs to your opponent. but, no one seems to like this becuz it takes more time.

play a game with EVERYONE using the same civ and same leader - on a balanced map.
level the playing field - find out who really is the best

Haha, you guys talk about always peace as if it's something really novel. It's basically 50% of non-ladder games; they're all islands matches, or big maps, or you're next to someone who doesn't know how to build units. Unfortunately non-ladder players suck really bad It's pretty impossible to lose a game.

Why don't we see any industrial teamers? Do they end ridiculously fast, or involve a lot more luck and double moving than skill? My favorite game music is in the industrial age... all that Brahms and Dvorak.

Perhaps a more severe civil unrest option for warring can be made for 'always peace' games where war like in CIV3 was brutal to a CIV's happiness level.
