Wonders are only a very small factor in points - on their own - their effects really matter though. And you might get a lot of great people, but they need to be used correctly. Crossbows have a 50% bonus against melee units, so they can destroy swordmen and macemen. They won´t be able to kill longbows and other crossbows in cities. And yes, they are expensive... in the early game. I remember I sometimes grabbed Machinery with the Oracle in the early stage of the game, only to find out that they were too expensive for my young, underdeveloped cities. You could use them as a counterunit to Praetorians...but they rather are for the middle/late game where they kill Pikemen and Macemen and where they can be produced a lot more. To me it seems that Ozzy went for a very defensive strategy. Longbows are almost doomed to hide in their cities, because they can be killed by cheaper axemen with a bonus against archers - especially when the axeman belongs to an aggressive civ. Yes, they are very hard to beat in cities - you should have pillaged his land instead and try to bring down his economy...I guess you didnt outtech him at all, you were just too proud with machinery. You argue that you should have won the game, because you are the better player (otherwise, you couldnt complain), but you are not. I would suggest you take a look at how the scoring system works. Your "strength" lies in quick expansion and an early chariot/horse attack, but if this fails, you will fall back in science and infrastructure. Rushes and mass city founding were probably the 2 outstanding concepts the game designers wanted to get rid off for CIV. You are playing "against" the game, i.e. trying to force your civ2 strategy onto civ4, instead of learning it. If you are not willing to change, then it´s really not your game.

Yes, you are right - unfortunately. Fried mostly plays duels though, they move on as fast as they should do. Games with more players somehow slow down.

A blazing timer is a bit more than half a minute - up to a minute during the game, so it´s 150 turns in 80-100 minutes, assuming noone drops and no lag, of course. But we also played c3c-games that lasted more than 2 hours, a lot more. With more routine we will play the most games with either fast or blazing timer.

The biggest advantage of gs arcade is the multitasking i think. For example, I could be in a game and also look whats going on in the GC clan room and in the main lobby. TD´s could send pm´s to players in a game, and they would see them immediately after. TD´s could be in a game, pause it, and discuss issues of other events.

I wonder if we should make regular advertisement in the lobby.

Have you "no city razing" turned on? If you have, it´s not possible. Conquered cities don´t count for elimination anyway (if you lose them again).

I like that all the possible exploits of c3c are gone for good. I like the much more logic micromanagement. I like the whole GP system as a 2nd aspect of economy which offers a whole new dimension of strategies.

Don´t forget Eyes that all the 3 games we played yesterday were not about defense, but about taking cities.
Btw, I was really glad when they got rid of the Zones of Control. It has always seemed somewhat artificial to me, and in mp there could be a lot of (almost) uncounterable blocking strategies, i.e. one unit can control a 3-tile landbridge

still better than giving myself the name of an illness ;D.
I talked to reptile now, and he was willing to change his name. I hope he knows how to do it in the CIV-lobby. I dont even know it myself!

I noticed tonight that there is another player on the ladder called "reptile". Ok, I chose to call myself GCReptile to express my affiliation to the clan, but then again I smell a bit of plagiarism, especially since I won the first Free-for-all tourney today. However, it´s not enough to accuse this player of stealing my name - If i needed to chose a new name for my internet identity, I´d choose reptile, too ;D . However, if you ever see a "reptile" in the lobby or in a game its not me "GCReptile", it´s another player. If he will ever sign up for the forums he´ll notice that there is someone else already....

Btw, look at the decrease of the number of c3c games played. Last monday (monday!) more than 400 games were played. Now, yesterday (a saturday!) only 250 games were played. The transition seems really quick, and with each day the private "ratings" get better and better.

A few perfomance tips: - turn on quick moves - single unit graphics - quick attack - frozen animations - a lot of settings to be set on "low" They can all be found in the graphics section of the options. Don´t forget that - in contrast to all other civ-games - the graphics are not outdated compared to other games of their time. You might not have success with the same video card that was enough for the already old-fashioned graphics of civ3 4 years ago. I have also noticed that it´s rather the combination of video card and RAM instead of one factor alone. However, 1 gb ram is definitely enough. After I had bought the game, I played a SP-epic on normal speed in 2 sessions which took about 7-8 hours. I hardly noticed a slowdown towards the end of the game. Ok, it was only 7 civs - but a large map. If performance is still bad, even on tiny maps, I would do other things, like checking for newer drivers. I would take a look at the config.ini and change the settings towards a better performance. Turning off screenshots helped me in the beta tests once. Maybe CS can give other hints. I also noticed that the performance gets a bit sluggish when I zoom out. It happens because there are much more animated things in one screen, but you can decrease the level of details in the globe view, too. It´s not even necessary to have it zoomed out all the time. Before I got used to it, I also thought that I do not get to see enough of the world. But it´s just a whole new system. Civs are not as far away from each other as they were in c3c. The world "feels" smaller and it is. Sometimes I build weakly defended cities only 5-6 tiles away from the enemy borders - which I had NEVER done in c3c! On the topic of wasted 50$: Well, it was foreseeable that a -maybe not even small- number of players will stick to c3c, since these games ARE different, it´s a fact. Rather than condemning the "other" side I would like a peaceful co-existence. I can only suggest that you give CIV a fair chance - it´s definitely worth it - but if you don´t want to change your game ..it´s ok. Heck, if there´ll be a seperate c3c-ccc I might even play it a few more times (if i could be helpful at all by then). And yes, I wasted 50$..err Euro. I bought the game, but now I know, I´ll get a free copy
