Well i guess then that I have "magically" made CIV work on both my pentium 3 and my new computer. I had to pull some rabbits out of my hat to get my radeon x700 to work for CIV, so don't make me out to be completely clueless about finding workarounds for CIV. Do you think CIV would work on Windows 98? I doubt it would work well .... if at all. Would windows 98 support all of the latest mb and graphics card drivers? what about directx? I'm not saying you're clueless, but it's not exactly rocket science making C4 work; I've "made" it work on two computers now mostly by installing and running it. The Windows 98 thing is a strawman and I shouldn't even have mentioned it. You might or might not have trouble on Windows 98; I have no idea, although I can tell you that ATI and NVidia drivers as well as DirectX definitely absolutely have updated Windows 98 versions, so I doubt it would be too tough. How many people bitching do you think have Windows 98? 2%? 5%? I bet it isn't 10%. Also I didnt specify "antivirus" programs, I meant various firewall programs or antivirus progs with built-in firewalls and whatever other nonsense ppl have running. Nope, you didn't specify, which is kind of ridiculous since they are two different things. Antivirus programs, although it's sort of a joke how many people let them constantly annoy them in the background, are not going to make a rat's ass of difference with respect to connection problems in civ. Firewalls have an obvious problem with an obvious solution; turn it off or forward port 2056. We're talking about people who have turned off their firewall, who have an updated computer, and who gives a nuts if 200MB of RAM is taken up by random-ass nuts f**king them up in the background. Yeah, it's true that most people have that running, but it shouldn't really impact the game. Me, I have a fast-ass computer, I have zero nuts running in the background, my firewall is down, my graphics card is mainstream, and I still get inexplicable problems sometime. Examine incident from today: A) In the middle of a teamer weaksauce drops suddenly. B) Two minutes later, sitting at the vote screen waiting for him, my game freezes utterly. Totally unresponsive. Window won't redraw or move, nothing is happening, won't minimize, won't close. I wait. C) Weaksauce can't rejoin because my game is f**ked. D) I force kill Civ, restart, and rejoin. Weaksauce then can't join; bad peer on me. E) I leave. Weaksauce joins. I then can't join; bad peer on weaksauce. F) Game is rehosted. We all join, and (happily) things work. Now OK, we managed to get around the problem, but it took ten minutes, and sometimes weird problems persist. How the f**k do you explain that with antivirus programs and Windows 98? EDIT: Holy nuts I really get a kick out of all the "nuts" in that post.

? connections issues would be THE KEY CONCERN in multiplayer...... That should have been IMMEDIATELY addressed..... I want people yada yada yada bad hair day or sexual tension? My comp and connection are top of the line. your post says you're at the bottom. zzZhenon was NOT found on the ladder. Closest Matches None were found. Sorry, that's the only response you'll get from me.

I searched his name as it appears when he posts (his profile) - zzZhenon, just like I posted and you quoted.
Beyond that, I don't care.

Well, it sounded like your post was implying that he was a tool for not being on the ladder. I just wanted to clarify that the point your post ACTUALLY makes is that you are too lazy to think for five seconds looking him up, which isn't really good or bad, because I don't care either - but it's a pretty silly point to make.

EDIT: Holy nuts I really get a kick out of all the "nuts" in that post. I feel that compared to Civ3, this is connection-paradise. I only rarely have connection issues with people and I've experienced connection problems in all sorts of games other than CIV. It happens in PC video games. Occasionally I feel that some problems are purposefully caused -- not your example though of course. In civ3 we had solutions to fix problems. Game laggy? Then close GS and all outside programs. Or try a reload, have host reboot, etc. You can't blame everything on the program, that's a cop-out, imho. Elle this is what I was mostly responding to -- I wasn't talking about random occasional connection problems during a game. He says that people can't "reliably" get into a game on a "regular" basis, which I take to mean that people aren't even able to join games. Which brings us full circle back to: 1) Do you have a firewall on? Did you open the port? 2) Are you running on a pentium 2 OR have 256 mb of RAM or less? 3) Do you have an ATI card? etc.

OK, fair enough, if a person really can't get into games regularly I gotta think the problem is on their end, because stuff like what I outlined above will happen every couple games with someone usually, but it's not every game and usually it's not tough to get it working with a quick workaround.

no firewall other than windowsXP which I turn on/off as needed, no ports to open or close, no router, direct cable connection +100mbs, 1000mb ram, top of the line ATI card (no, not the newest but one that triples minimum game requirements)
I'm talking about not conecting to peer - a problem that didn't exist prior to 1.52 or the previous 2 Civ MP games.
I can host, I'm not a bad peer when I go into a game (as others connect after me) and my ping is always +/- 110.
as previously stated, I have NO OTHER ISSUES with the game other than the 1.52 creation of the "bad peer" an issue that effects nearly EVERYONE in the lobby.
Prior to 1.52 (using 1.09 or the original game release in october) I had NONE of the techncial issues or connection problems that many had, but now I have to deal with all the other bad peers (not mine) that the majority have.
The problem isn't with my computer as it exceeds game specifications, but with the "changes" made that would allow lesser/older comps to run the game.
You're right, people who use a computer that does not meet or exceed minimum game requirements IS an issue - an issue that effects everyone on MP - just like C3.

Do you think that the previous patch which allowed more people with lower end machines to play CIV are the cause of this? like maybe their computer can't keep up with their fast connection hehe
At least the new patch will help us precisely identify bad peers
