Off topic, But did they give the test patch to anyone with a Radeon 9550 card? Whip..im running CIV on a ATI 9000/9100 which is even BELOW min standards. I do however have a 3 gig processor and 1.5 gigs of Ram. I run on the lowest video settings, and my processor works hard to take over for the lack of my video card supporting T&L. This is a laptop, so I cannot change the video card out, I think Santa may bring me a new laptop, even though this one is less than 10 months old. I partake in lots of games with 6 - 8 peeps, I have even been in some bigger ones with up to 18 with no problems.

I don't need any rank, Mo... The reason for idling is probably the frequency of the games these days too, with lobby crashes and so on.
Cobra, regardless of how new or old you are to this game, emphasizing how "I wasn't good enough to gain rank when I had a chance" is lame. I hope you were joking. The point of this thread is not how much each of us is skilled in civ4.

There is a compatibility issue with the higher end ATI cards, the lower end ones work.

Whip have you tried the unpacking of the PAKs yet? Anyway your wait will be over soon (&(%$30k348&%$ I've tried everything. I did the unpaking and it allowed me to play SP, which I find boring as hell. I can't join a MP.

Frankly, I doubt it as nothing seems to work for me.

HEY! Why don't all you ruffians leave poor ol' Lu alone. He has enough to worry about. Being the father figure to the ladder is no small task. His diligence is commendable. Surely you recall his thankless work over the past year(s), so be it unmentioned, himself aside. I am thank full for someone looking out for the rules and regulations in such a 'particular' manor. (the 7 day rules could not be shortened, less vacations be disallowed)
"I know what #1 means in terms of criticism. I was there too." -Lu You were #1? I must have taken a day off....
Actually , if you were #1 then who was there to criti....no, never mind.
Cobra 2 years and only on 10 occasions you could find people that were willing to tolerate you? pity.
Mo , you actually play this game? why don't you come outa the hermitage you dwell in and mingle? At least, if not, let the Mrs out to play
WhipWhile I was trading recipes with Mrs Claus she told me that indeed Trayak would be getting a lil gift from Santa(no, not that!). Perhaps you could have him dish his stuff your way, after all I believe it was Trayk himself that said ' the needs of the many out-weight the needs of the few'
[glow=yellow,2,300][/glow]
Yup, go gold. I reset my stat every day or two. I don't want to be a slave to the decadent Ladder. ::)Actually, I will ,likely, stop when I forget to hit the button... er, figure out how to actually play this game.
Lobby Drops? I have had much success now that I have moved into window version, not full screen. I have ,awhile ago, played a game where I left on loads of other prog's while I played a game. I noticed, turned them off and noticed no greater playing experience(no lag). This was never more than a dream b4 I went to boxed.
Well, everyone has to have some fun. If it has to be pokin fun at poor ol' Lu, so be it, he knows where I am coming from.( if ya can't take the heat...)

the point wasn't to show that you don't have skill Lu... the Point was you had a chance. I was top ten and i played you 3 times. WTF more do you want from me?

I think Lu s point is understandable, in civ3 there was (at least at some time) some gentleman s agreement that if u are n1 u play a f**kin lot.
I play really a lot and at very different times but the only top 10 s I have seen were Frie once saying - "hey who want a 1 vs 1" and then saw some friend and played him and ghost and cobra once on other hand the top 10 s were decided when I ddint even have my copy of civ4 and did change more or less not at all since that time. Its not that a big problem but a total change from civ 3 times and also not a real league with competition. If u wana be n1 1 to 10 u should show your skillz more often - if u dont care possibly just really drop rank (I dont wana tell some1 to drop his rank)

yeah really... if you "don't care about rank" then why have it?
But i guess it doesn't really matter since we can see from civ3 that rank is a joke (you know what i mean)

Exactly. If no one cares about rank then have yourselves dropped and let those who do seem to care about the status of being top 10 get in there. If no one cares about rank then why have a ranking system on ladder? Cmon kids, this rank argument is old, old, old. And I thought CIV was a new game

The rules about top 10 ranked players are the same as always. There are supposed to play as often once in the top 10 as they played to get to the top 10. If they don't play over a 7 day period, their rank will be automatically dropped. If anyone is being a rank-monger in your opinion, simply email me (or any other admin). I write them a letter and give them 72 hours usually to play a challenge or be dropped in rank.
Rank matters to some, and not to others. In my experience with the ladder over several years, there is usually quite a bit of fluidity with the top 10. You have to play often and keep winning to stay in top 10 or you'll be leapfrogged.
The game can be a lot of fun without pursuing a top rank; however, for some moving up in rank is a lot of fun also. We try to be supportive of both groups.
Best, SPM

the most irritating is the hypocrisy about ranks.. I can count the players for who it really doesnt mean nuts on my 2 hands. all others are somewhere between competitors frankness (and theres nothing wrong with it if you keep it civil) and denying, resetting stats etc

Cobra - the comment wasn't for you. I don't see you with 3+ days idle consistently. At the time I started this thread you were #11, with 0.1 days idle. I was referring strictly to top 8, all with 3+ days and CONSISTENTLY so. So back off, you do give chances, I wasn't talking about you . DustyDragoons - while some in the top 10 ARE really good, we all know that whoever played first on ladder - most if not all beta testers - gained high rank immediately. If they don't play often now, there is no way to lose it. I am pretty sure that some in that top10 are beatable no problem by the likes of Cruise, Ktulu, Tommynt, Zaxxon, Yilar etc, people who just got the game, like us. And consistently beaten at that, too. For all others that say rank doesn't mean jack - in the beginning it actually does. It stop saying much when most people with significant skill stop playing (boredom) after at least 1-1.5 years... In the beginning of the c3c ladder, rank 1 was really held by players with significant skill, that everyone saw as great. No offense, but later when many players retired or played ocassionally, #1 was held by players better than average at future, and that's about it. So, for now, in civ4, rank CAN mean something. SPM - if everyone in top 10 would consistently have 5 days idle say, and then play a 1v1, then have 5 days idle more... It's in the rules, but would you cut them slack? Will it be fun? I admit I care about rank. I always did. It's part of the fun. I also admit that AT THIS POINT I do not have the skill to get #1. I probably could get to top 10 with some lucky teamers where I would get help. But on my own it would be hard. This thread is not because I want to get there. It's a discussion of principles. Yes Vermillion, it IS the ladder business how often you play, if you want to KEEP #4 (or whatever your rank is). C out.

Well Lu let me say first off I'm not a beta tester...never have been. Secondly, Like I said before I play whenever and whoever I can. I am currently involved in two epic games and I play on average of about 4 times a week. I'd say thats pretty good for someone with a) a full time job b) An angry girlfriend that absolutely despises all forms of video games and has threatened repeatedly to throw my PC out the window ( which incidentally would probably result in her death ) c) A KID!! d) did I mention a family?? e) a full time working band f) numerous other things that unfortunately take priority. I believe I am a decent player and can hold my own! The wins I have were not given to me. You know what, why don't you and I switch ranks......will that make you happy?? It doesn't really bother me, sure I enjoy being where I am but I'm not going to cry about being in the top 10 or others gaming habits. I do see your point..... however, others have other responsibilities (testers testing etc...) I think you should do a little more research before you start pointing fingers. I play in the ladder for the purpose of good competition and solid non-quiting games, if my game frequency isn't to your liking, well....... I play within the rules and frankly.....its really NOT your business! ( on a side note the 3 or 5 days your referring to also have alot to do with late reports)

Im with Lastride on this... if you dont care about rank, why dont you ask to be put down 20 ranks? Problem solved!
Also wasn't there something about the beta testers having to be particular active to prove they belonged in the top10 or something?
