Canta, Did you buy Civ1? Civ2? Civ3? PTW? Conquests? All of these are the same game ingeneral. They all have the same components that we all seem to like with some tweaking along the way. Civ4 is nothing like Civ3. Nearly all successful franchises stay successful because they identify their audience and stay loyal to them and to the game. I dont think this one has done that this time around and apparently I am not alone in this thought as it appears to be the consensus in the Conquests lobby. Civ1=no Civ2=yes Civ3=yes Ptw=gotm only C3C=yes I understand your point about following in line with the series but i think if they had just made it a improved c3c they wouldnt be meeting new markets and getting in new players which they are trying to do. Which in my opinion is a good thing to do if you are a business trying to make money. The game is still essentially the same, build a civ, conquer your neighbours etc just a lot of different things in civ4, like you said previous not able to move over mountains etc. I really dont see that as being a big deal. They have said they are trying to keep the game fun and add in a lot of new things as well. I don't want a repackaged c3c i want a new experience in civving and this is why i think they have gone down the right track. On the game spec's, I have read of a lot of people with minimum specs running the game just fine, so i think a lot of you with higher than normal specs need to tweak your machine's etc, I don't have a pwerful machine a 1.8, 512 ram,64 graphics and have no problem running games like RTW, BF etc that use a lot more resources than civ4 will. So I don't xpect any problems. And i read that people with a lot higher machines than me get a lot of lag on these games so I think a lot of time its what's running in the background, how high or low the game settings are, what you have got updated, eg if your sound card isn't updated then this can cause lag in games. I was surprised that they had issues with ATI card's as half the beta testers had those video cards and none reported those problems apparently, yet it seems every game that is released has issues of one sort or another. It's just something one has to accept when buying a new release computer game, isn't that what pathces are for. Im not saying it's not right but from what i can gather so far there are not that many if any actual game play bugs that have been picked up it all seems to be about compatability issues which is very hard to test on every kind of computer configiration there is. Take bf2 for example there budget was huge compared to civ4 and yet there are lot's of ingame bugs found on release day that have still not been fixed with patches months after release. And its still doesnt work on some peoples comp's who have higher than the reccomended specs. I saw 3 people from firaxis on apolotyn asking there customers for specific information about there comp's the day of release whom where having problems, i know of no other gaming company which would go to these lengths to help there customers like that. Give this game a chance please people. And have fun.

Just to make it clear again. I really like this game and the new features. I played my space race all day again and get quiete familiar with how it works, but whose idea has it been to make it possible to rush Great Wonders with money? I am shocked. So all comes down to who has a tech needed for a Great Wonder first and the money to rush it. Why trying to get Great people, why buidling up a good productive city to win the build a wonder race? Doesn't it make least in that aspect the idea with the Great People obsolete. Ah well. Rhyanon

Being new to these forums I thought I would pipe in. I was at first a little daunted by all the new stuff they want you to learn but having played for a couple of days now I really don't see much of a difference between this and the first 3 civs. You ask why are there all these food sources, well they are more for early cities then modern cities. They relied on local food to help them survive where the cities without suffered. I think it is a brilliant addition to the game that makes choosing where to place your cities more of a strategic choice.

Rhyanon Sorry for the double post but I missed this. I found that if you focus on production you may lose out on the wonders race but could excel everywhere else. While the wonders are good they do not seem as great as in the previous civs. The exception is of course the ones that give free techs. I would rather have the gold to upgrade my units. I can then use my superior units to take over the city that houses the wonder =o).

If Civ4 were anything like Civ 3 it probably wouldn't sell and I wouldn't be posting here right now. However, I have reservations about the incredibly slow expansion rate. I'm used to civ2 where I'm building 100 cities per game by 1000BC. That being said, managing 100 cities got kind of old so I'm ok with less cities. I can't wait to play civ4 and see what exploits I can find. I remember when I found the bribe bug and the trade bugs in civ2, so much fun trying to find those things. ehem, A) If you finds bugs report them B) If you need to use bugs to win, you suck C) If you exploit a bug you will be banned D) Your constant trash talking, and egoism is infringing on my territory, you are now Public Enemy Number 1 of the Phan-man. Good Day. P.S. I've played MP on EVERY version of Civ. From Civnet through Now. If you think that skill means nothing because of luck factors in odds of battles, then may I suggest you start studying Game Theory and adjust your strategies thusly. As with all games of Civ. Information Information Information is the key!

Remember - we treat each other with respect here. That includes you, Phan. This isn't the wild frontier of the C3P board. Temporary postblocks and outright bans will be enforced. That post wasn't over the line, but it was treading on it.

Hey guys, c3c was getting old! And it's rescource management was an absolute joke. It's like your own business, if you're not growing you're falling behind. If c4 does as it promises and overhauls rescource management and distribution as well as eliminate the imfamous caveman versus battleship scenario, then I'll consider it money well spent. C1/2/3 were a wonderful series but it's time to grow up and get real.

jonbe54, I think you will enjoy Civ4. Give it some time, and soon you will be addicted. Don't be like some of the hooligans on this board who play it for one day and automatically say they hate it.

I'll add my two cents to this after reading all the negativity on CFC and now seeing it spawn here ....
The key message here is time and patience.
Firaxis folks are a dedicated and truly concerned bunch of folks that will resolve the problems.
CIV4 is not your CIV3 or PTW experience. This is likely the most changed version since CIV II. At first I went holy XXXX ! I hate it but ... after several times playing during the beta test I loved it. It's not just a beat them up and kill game. The depth of play is quite amazing.
Unfortunately to get this new depth some of the older machines out there will not cut it. This was my concern from the get go. It's very memory intensive so if you can shutdown other tasks while you play do so or go out and get 1GB of RAM. Update your video cards to support DirectX9 proper or ensure your video drivers are up to date. You need a gamer type system for this that will support high end 3d graphics ...thats what the market demands. The CIV franchise has just finally caught up

Wanna know their reply? They start to tell me I suck and start bringing in C3C and how I sucked at it and all that other BS. Why? Because they don't like the change and they are frustrated that they can't do the same strats they did during C3C. I try to tell them this, but they are just really rude. After a while, I just ignore them and hope they go back to C3C and I never see them again. I just wish they understood it. I think if we check back in a month, they'll finally start to understand.

after my first civ 4 game i was like why did i waste my money on this i could of gone out and spent the money i spent on a video card/game/book at the bar (would of had good time also) ;D ;D ;D ;D this game grows on you i actully like this way better then c3c. this game has more options from start. yes it takes time to get your civ going but once you do the skys the limit. i mean this game is more indepth then c3c or any other older civ game. not only do u need to bring the unit u want to kill with u got to bring its counter with it. kind of makes it real life like. i mean come on every war in life didn't just go to battle with 1 unit they had others with them. now theres not really a unit thats worthless(depending on play style) just saying give the game some time. just cause it has a learning cruve dont' throw the thing away. the only thing i don't like on this game is the starting points in some maps. seen some people who start with a scout 3 to 5 tiles away from someone who starts with a warrior and get rushed. i mean come on not much u can do in that spot there but to just hope another game is about to start in lobby. but other then that this game is great.

I've liked the game from the very first game I played. The gameplay is amazing and it is such a deeper game. I actually feel like I'm being challenged now just to figure out how to build a settler faster. I also haven't found any in game bugs which is amazing. What I have found though are tons and tons of out of game bugs and I know for fact the beta testers knew about them pre-release. There's really no excuse for it. Simple things like not having a properly scrollable game list where you have to use arrow keys instead of a mouse should be obvious in testing. I think once it's all fixed though that this will be the best civ4 ever. I'm still a little skeptical about the resource thing though. Luck in strategy games sucks.

Just finished my 2nd full game (don't ask how I was able to complete two games in the time since CivIV was released...). Gotta say that there is some here that I agree with though overall I have enjoyed my CivIV time.
1) Completely agree that the game is big and fat and sloppy. I can't play on my laptop anymore so I can't take it with me. Its no longer a casual thing - I've gotta commit to sitting at my gaming console (of my 3 computers: 1 runs great (GeForce 6600), 1 runs ok, but poor performance on lowest settings (GeForce FX 5200), and my laptop gets the cheshire display bug - so no go).
What's worst about the graphical req is that Firaxis didn't finish the low-end graphical treatment. If you set on low and no animations, you miss a lot of key features - for instance - how can you tell if you have a fighter on Intercept?? It doesn't show on the map, it doesn't say in the unit tooltip - the only way to know is to actually click on the unit and see that the Intercept button doesn't exist. This is one example of many - all correctable by graphic mods and an update.
2) Gotta give it time. Yes, there are a LOT more worker improvements, yes there are more resources. The potential for micromanagement is HUGE (I haven't yet set a worker on auto - a bit of a masochist that way I guess). My first game on Chieftan revealed very little about the nuances of the AI or the various features in the game - just not much of a challenge. My second game on Noble gave more of a hint of the subtlety required to win. (Not that that subtlety requires the goopy interface but alas, ITS STILL THERE). This game is afterall still a great and DEEP strategy game.
3) So not true. Play some more. And when you do play some more, think back to the days after PTW was first released... Nevermind, those memories are too painful. Ok, just a peek - this is week 1 of CivIV. Firaxis is pretty responsive.
My single biggest gripe = why can I zoom in so close? What is the point in that? Its a strategy game?!? Wish I could zoom OUT farther and still move my units around - the close-up just seems completely unnecessary. Oh well, will get used to it - while I'm calculating the spreadsheet of citizens working tiles to specialists and food / happiness requirements, I guess I'll take a few minutes to watch warriors slapping blades together.
BTW, very happy to come back to civ3players (er 4) and see this community still around and still as engaged as ever in hearty and friendly debate!

I think the reason we testers didnt catch that was because we didn't have the 50+ games in the lobby, so we didn't really have to scroll in the first place. I think the lobby is very well designed, but I crash every 30 seconds when in it, sometimes from talking, sometimes from switching to YIM or something else, sometimes from doing absolutely nothing. Yup, the game is very sluggish
