Well my computer has been overrun by some virus that my siblings got on it, and for the past 8 months or so i've been too lazy to get it fixed. My computer won't even start now, it just says that it can't read the disks and to press ctrl+alt+delete, but that does not work. I know of an expensive way w/o buying a new computer which is to send it to the computer shop where they just make the computer like new for lots of money. Is there another way though to remove this virus, by perhaps a program or something, that doesn't mean i have to spend 500 or so dollars.

I don't suppose you ever made a recovery disk.
If not, boot off of the windows cd and reinstall the operating system. You will lose everything except whatever is under documents and settings; but you should be able to get up and running again.

If it can't read the disk the virus has like destroyed the "Master Boot Record" on your Hardrive. Like Whip said, use your windows XP boot disk, but in addition chose the Advanced settup and have it try and format your HD first, if that fails, just exit to the dos prompt and try to "fdisk" the partition, and create a new partition that takes up the full disk, and then format it. If none of that works then the virus has damaged the HD to much and you'll just have to get yourself a new HD, but not a new computer.

Thanks for all the good advice, but it turns out all the cd's that went with the computer were thrown out. Do any of you have any advice for a good harddrive that I may buy?

you can't start your comp in safe-mode? (save mode achieved by constantly hitting F8 a few times after starting comp - lots of options there)
If you can, you should try running the "limited" anti-virus options there, or worst case scenario - do a "system restore"
a more difficult option from safe-mode is to copy programs to a newly created owner/admin account (takes a little time) and then delete ALL the other user accounts.
I had this problem about a 18 months ago and $9.95 (american dollars) and a call to microsoft support 1-800-9396-5700 paid for unlimited phone support for that specific issue (as I recall, about 2 days, 8 totla phone hours) and we got it fixed.
It was a combination of things including a "corrupt IE Explorer bar"

Why buy a new computer if your only problem is xp being corupted by a virus ? Read this www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.htmlDo a complete reinstall and before you even go online have a friend or family member that has net access download and burn you a cd with. AVG Free - Free antivirus Zone Alarm Free - Free noob friendly firewall Spybot-S&D - Free spy ware scaning and removal app (install the tea timer active protection) Ad Aware SE - Another free spyware removal tool. SpywareBlaster - Free tool that blocks a crap load of activex viruses Firefox & Thunderbird - Free browser and email client with fewer exploits then ie and outlook. oh and learn to use a hosts file on your pc dundats.mvps.org/Software/Index.htm HOSTS File Manager does a nice job updating itself. Download and install the first three before even going online again and then update xp via windows update or AutoPatcher xp autopatcher is pretty quick once you have it downloaded. And let this be a lesson for you never have an internet connected pc and no protection on it your just asking for trouble =p

The reason to buy a new computer is so... 1. I don't get hassled 2. The XP is around 6 years old which for a computer is old 3. Computers are relatively cheap at the moment for a good one such as the amd athlon 3700 x64 that the very helpful Bantams has suggested. 4. I don't have the disk for recovery.
Thanks for websites by the way people.

Thanks for websites by the way people. #2 means nothing as xp can be easily updated ,but anyway new is always better anyway. Sadly I also have to buy a new pc my computer has been rebooting on it's own lately so I took it apart and changed the power supply it worked up untill I woke up this morning and it was off I checked the connectors and the Mother Board had been the problem it shorted out . Anyway since it's 2 years old and finding another board to replace it will not be easy I decided to stop by a local pc shop and ordered a antec server case w 450w ps , athlon 3300 64 bit processor , a geforce 6600 pci express video card , and a new asus MB I'll transplant the ram ,hard drives ,optical drives and floppy drive to the new system run xp repair and be back online within a few days hopefully. atm I checking in from a friends pc .

How much did you buy it for? Also tell me if it's any good, and if yes, can I get one at Best Buy? Asus A8N-E MB 129.99 AMD Athlon64 3000+ 169.99 MSI Radeon x800 169.99 Antec sx1040bII 109.99 Total : 621.02 Now they might be a tad higher than normal ,but I didn't have time to order parts and slap a system together so I bit the bullet and probably payed maybe a 100 bucks more in the end then I would have if I had shoped around and put it together myself. I picked it up the next day from this ma and pc shop installed the 240 and 120 gb drives ,2gb ram ,and 2x dvd burners from the toasted system reformated the OS drive after doing a xp repair and backing up important data. ATM I am fininalizing the reinstall of all my apps I am about 70% done and hope to be playing civ soon =p Yes it's a good setup the cpu is upgradable for years as the motherboard can accept all 64 bit cpu's that amd has out now the only thing I forsee as a small problem is SLI ,but I am not that heavy of a gamer to need two video cards =p The Antec case is nice and roomy and easy to work with and expand with. The Radeon X800 Video card is mid ranged so it should play most 3d games quite well not to mention graphics and video editing apps. And the Processor may be a bit slower than I wanted ,but I may experiment with overclocking a bit since the motherboard makes it so simple. All and all I recomend it ,but your not going to find it at a best buy mate .

Of course you do realize you are comparing dollars to pounds..that price is approximately 336 pounds Correct and as I said I could have saved about a 100.00 if I built it myself and ordered the parts, but I needed to get my system rebuilt asap. I see it this way I was going to upgrade in another year anyway and I'll just buy another asus board later ,vid card ,and faster chip then and upgrade my other machine the much faster chip will go in this rebuilt pc .

Your current pter will be a problem, it will tell you the hard drive is incorrect if its one of those piece of nuts prebuilts. Pop in your windows disk, DELETE your documents and settings file, this is THE MOST virus ridden folder you can own. If you have a trojan or virus, its PROBABLY in your documents and settings folder. If your having problems before it got to that stage, make a new profile and delete your old. Dont transfer any file from your old profile that you arne't really sure is safe. Most viruses, even pain in the ass ones, target a profile. Same with spyware. Remember, services and ini files are different wth each profile, so its a really useful way to shake bugs. Reading your entire situation, ya, you threw away your discs.. Your computer is worthless. Its over, buy a new one Hit me up on email or something, and I may be motivated to send an actual fix cd in mail, Your computer is gonna require some magic. Lucky we close for years now, so If you really want me to I'll get you a cd sent in the mail.
