Here's EoN's "final" post over al 'poly" --------------------------------------------------------------------- Just a little update. In my past 30 games on the ladder I have lost only 5 games. In the past 20 or so games since I got a real handle on the game I am pretty much undefeated. There are only about 5 people on the ladder who could beat me. I can now march my points right up to 3000 in very little time. I no longer bother trying to take cities except early on. I have a very good grasp of all the strategies and I am completely dominating for the most part. I hate the game even more now as I realize how ridiculous it has become. Rushing is king early on, but if it doesn't work just sit back and build **** all day long. I usually make my long bows strong enough to defend against a nuclear attack and I throw a bunch of catapults in my city. I honestly can say now that I hate this game. I hate how easy it has become. I hate how mindless the combat is and how ridiculous the defense values are. I'm tired of building missionaries and great leaders as I keep looking at how much gold I'm gaining. I find myself focusing less on what the other player is doing and more on what my score is doing. So now I can get 3 times the score as my opponent and i can defend against the apocalypse with just a few longbows or musketmen and I can do every strategy under the sun...and I feel like it is the biggest waste of time ever. Never have I felt so disgusted with a game before. This will probably be the last PC game I ever play because every game out there is taking the path that civ4 and AOE3 have taken. Honestly, it's probably for the best because I can do far more profitable things with my time. If you're an idiot and find building temples and monasteries difficult, this game is for you. Incredible... First of all, I'd like to address the fact that he has longbows, musketmen, and catapults while ppl are throwing around nukes? Who was he playing with and why didn't they attack him? That's not a game problem, that's a lack of competition. If there were nukes in the game.... where were the tanks? I think he ought to make #1 and play against all of the beta testers, Fried, etc. before claiming to be one of the top 5 players. But if he doesn't like the game then he doesn't like the game. Oh well... People are still learning the game, very few have even messed with mod'ing.... there's so much more potential. EoN, did you know that a german guy mod'ed civ3 for LotR? Yeah it had new portraits, units, terrain, etc. It looked like a completely different game. Did you know that several veteran ladder players mod'ed civ3? Examples of mods such as UUmadness, where you could build any civ's UU with the appropriate resource; or what about Wtib's or Elrad's Future mods, where they "fixed" certain aspects for MP play? It's very probable that some player will make a more militaristic mod for civ4... maybe something like having all city defensive bonuses cut in half. The point of Civ4 is not to "go out and militarily conquer everyone." That's only 1 aspect. If that's what you're looking for, then go play warcraft 3. I also suggest that you try all game settings and age starts.

Way too much time has been given to this shlep. I do believe that he never faced Nukes but was making a reference to how mighty his defenses were. Almost undefeated? WTF does that mean, is that like kinda maybe, a definate maybe, likely perhaps? You are or you aren't: Simple. I will shed no tears as to the departure of this unknown forum hack. As not knowing him I cannot say if he is a game hacker as well(meaning low grade). 3ooo points? GREAT. Yet this is meaningless without context. How many turns? 150? 1500? a million!? I have seen games go for high scoring with loads of points and the same people play to 1/2 the total scores by (another )games end. Points are only relevant to each game, I believe. Obviously, some are superior pointers: good for them. Killing, I have found is far easier than I had expected. I have seen from many vantage point the late game deaths. Be it my own killin or death or simply on the side lines. Food for thought: if killing is so hard, wtf are most ladder games 2 city elim I like the game. Enjoy!

wasting your breath Z, narrow minded people like EON dont have that kinda grasp on "the big picture". I for one am very happy to hear this news, as Im sure EON will not be missed much.

Some points
1) Ok he's played 30 games and won 25 of them by the sounds of it mostly 1v1. That means he's probably played about 12.5% of the current ladder population, so therefore saying that only 5 players can beat him is complete nonsense.
2) if you play with say 6 players and you point rush, your painting a big fat, take me out my military is probably weak target on your head.
3) In a 1 v 1 if I saw a player pointing ahead, then I'd use successive waves of choking units to cut the guys production and growth. One thing about this game is that you can't score high and produce a vast military at the same time, particularly in the early game. If he played anyone worth his salt using the tactics he outlined he'd have his arse handed to him no doubt.
4) out building a builder is also an option picking civs which are bound to leap on in score is an easy counter to builders.
This guys a noob who doesn't even realise he's a noob, I'm a noob so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong?

I had an interesting discussion with EON in which I tried to suggest to him to play something other than 1v1 format. I also pointed out that playing just 1 v 1's is unlikely to get you a reputation as a good player. I think we all remember the top 20 player lists from C3c and by far in a way the players that topped the lists, where good all round players in many scenarios. I tried to tell him that the general concensus is specialists don't earn the same sort of reputation as the all rounders, simply because it takes more skill to become proficient at several scenarios. According to EON there's more skill in winning a 1 v 1 than there is an 8 player cton or a future teamer or ffa, or in fact having a good record in all of them. I'm not sure I'd go along with that at all. 1 v 1's are very 1 dimensional and frankly IMO take less skill to master than all the others put together by a long stretch. There are players out there who have very consistent win records in many scenarios, from my personal point of view I'd say they were better players. Anyway, what do you think? Is EON right is the true test of player skill the duel mirror 1v1?

I'm actually getting pretty bored of the game already to be honest. I feel right now the way I did in Age of empires 2 a month ago when the game finally died after 8 years and I felt like I had done everything in the game there was to do. I'm feeling this way on a game that has only been out about a month. I'm not the only one that feels that way either. As I talk to more and more people I'm finding I'm not the only one seeing the problems in this game. If I hadn't joined NoD I probably wouldn't play this game anymore because I've gotten bored of seeing how high a skill rating or how good a win percentage I can get since that was the only thing left that I felt there was some sort of challenge in. Even though I'm winning, I don't feel like I'm doing anything special or something that someone else can't do very easily; I just figured it out before they did. Alot of people say there's no magic in the game, or no mystique, or no secret. You guys tried so hard to simplify the game that you took all the fun right out of it. I'll still play the game, if only because I enjoy playing with NoD, but I'll probably become one of those people who plays a game every 3-5 days. This game just doesn't have it. I would rather lose every day and wonder how I lost than winning every day and not feeling like I'm doing something special. I guess in the end...where's the magic?

Well, there are STILL many things to learn - for example -
EyesOfNight is now Civ4 ladder/player NoD_EyesOfNight who now posts here on the Civ4 forum with yet another new name of "whois."
If the game is that "unchallenging" then why are you so challenged by the forum board?
Perhaps the "Great 2005 NoD/CCC scandle" still haunts you and your hatred of Fried for "turning on his fellow clannies" still burns within you.

That was cute, but I didn't play civ3. The combat system was so horrible that I just couldn't get past it. This game has a slightly improved combat system that I can barely tolerate. Unfortunately they killed what made civ civ. They sucked all the skill out of the game to try and appeal to beginning players and along with it they took out all the challenge and fun. What appealed to me so much about NoD was the fact that they got expelled from CCC. I was told about Ktulu and how he was accused of cheating and how Fried looked at all his saves to try and find how he was winning. Ktulu was to civ3 what I was to civ2 and I like that alot. It's rare that I get along with people online and NoD is just like the Divine tribe was. It's just a shame that we don't have a good game to play because I probably could have really enjoyed playing in NoD and playing civ. The game isn't beyond fixing, I just don't think there is the desire to do so from the developers and the beta testers. I guess they still haven't figured out why Civilization 2 was such a success and why their success continues to go down with each release. Don't feel bad though, ES has the same problem as they found out with AOM and now AOE3. They'll never learn I guess, but then again it's not my problem. I could fix the game in a heartbeat but I know that's never going to happen and I'm not going to waste anymore time caring about it.
