Everyone keeps talking about playing in Windows version saves you a lot of headache. Does it really help, and if so, how can I do it? If it involves changing .ini files, please clue me in a bit, as I am basically electronically slowed.

I think you mean in windows mode. Do this:
You can find a shortcut called _Civ4config in the Sid Meier's Civiliazation 4 folder. Click on it and it takes you to the config file. About 3/4 of the way down there is command for running in fullscreen, the default is 1. Edit this to not run in fullscreen. The options are 0/1/ask. Enter 0 and you can then minimize it using the upper right button. If you change to "ask" you will be prompted after the game loads.
My observation, though, is that the lobby works better in windows mode; but the game doesn't play well as the scroll is extremely slow and clumbsy.

Yeah I use the arrow keys to move about when in windows mode, much easier. It's either that or play run the gauntlet with the lobby, aw damn the game moved a place and it crashed, soooo close.

Does it have to be set to 1? Mines set at 4 , whats the difference? Are you playing in windowed mode?? This setting allows you to scroll the map when your mouse pointer hits the side of you screen and top and bottom of the map. If the setting you are using works for this then fine but the only setting that worked for me was 1.

Yes Im playing in windows mode but havent tried since changed scroll speed to 4 just was wondering if it made a diff what the speed was on. It is not a speed selection. It's a binary setting. 1=yes, 0=no. Even though I have edited the file to set it to 1, the scroll left and right is extremely slow and it won't scroll up and down at all. So, you have to click on the minimap to navigate the map.

If you play in windowed mode also remember to set your perameters for the window mine is set for 1920x1200 there is a different place for each. Also to scroll up and down ones needs click the double square so that it works. No idea what the button is called it is between minimize and maximize. Anyway this should help those with windowed problems.
Yes Whip is right I am a moron I guess, but most of you all already knew that.. Anyway setting it up as I stated makes my system run smoothly though some notifications from YIM and MSN fug the screen a bit until they go away in like 3 to 5 seconds.

OK, this is really wierd. I edit the file to set fullscreen to "ask" and it does that once. After the load the .ini file automatically changes to "1" again for the next load. This did not happen before the patch, but does happen now.

Not sure if this is the issue but I am sure you like many of us testers have more than 1 CIV version on comp... Maybe check that the one you are lauching is tied to the ini you are fixing... I did this once myself..

I did this once myself.. Damn, that's what I get for volunteering. I ran a search and found CivilizationIV files going back to May. I'm now thinking that's why I have connection problems. How do I get rid of the old crap that now appears to be corrupting my current game version?

I beleive most of the beta versions installed into C:\Sid Mieiers Civilization4\ by default, check there and delete the entire folder. Also use one of the "mygames" shortcuts, like saves or screenshots, to take you to your true mygames folders, these are in the root Civ folder, C:\program files\Firaxis\Sid meiers Civilization4\ by default. If you see a second "Sid meiers Civilazation4" under "My Games" delete it as it's the old one.

I found the old folders and files buryed deep under c:\documents and settings in a "my games" folder. Do I delete the my games folder too, even though it's empty after I deleted 2 folders there?
Hopefully, cleaning this up will solve my CIV nightmare.

Hate to say this as it's time consuming as all get out (well, not as time consuming as some of the things we were waiting for, lol) - but
do a comp search for "civ4" (or whatever) and delete it all (leftovers from where you tried the beta-thing). Just to make sure, I'd also do a *.sav" search for any saved C4 games that might be there.
Then reinstall the game and the patch completely.
you shouldn't have to re-do the Radeon fix as it's now in the patch, but be sure to have your anti-virus off when downloading the game and patch again.
You're right, it DOES make sense specifically for you since you had previous (beta) civ4 files on your comp.
I'm not sure, but I think Civ4 is the first Civ since the original Civ that doesn't file share with previous versions of Civ.
