I have played several single player civ 4 games with no problems (my comp is slightly below recommended specs for the game, but quite a bit above required specs.) In mp however, every time I try and join a game with someone who is in the staging room, I disconnect every single time the game is launched, as soon as the game begins. I never even see the other people in the game, it drops me right away. However, I have been able to successfully connect to three games that were already in progress. Any ideas? I never had one problem with mp play in Civ 3, I am not sure what I am doing wrong, or how to fix it. Thanks.

During the test this happened with people that had computers that couldn't process the game fast enough to keep up with the other players during launch, and the game basically times you out. The solution that we used many times was to load a AI and let the person hotjoin. What are your system spec? and what is your internet connection like?

CS Well, I have a g force mx 4000 128 mb video card, a 1.4 ghz processor, and 386 mb. Ram. I plan on upgrading the Ram another 256 mb next week as I have an open slot, however financial reasons prevent me from doing too much else. My internet connection is solid, its digital cable I think it connects at 3 kbps (or something like that). Thanks CS.

Your card is on the weak side too, I'd look at replaing it as if the card can't do T&L in hardware, it off loads that onto the CPU.

There is a lobby bug, that will cause a CTD. This ussually happens when you try to switch windows, but also will just happen while hanging out in chat. This I believe is caused by the number of games listed, and the number of people in the lobby. When beta testing we never had anywhere close to the number that we have now, so no real way to stress test the lobby like it is now. Hopefully this will be fixed in the first patch.

It was a 32 mb video card so this is WAY better. I dont know if it has the T and L thing or not, but on the video end, I havent had serious problems as of yet. Here is my question. If I upgrade the Ram from 386 to over 800 mb's, will that improve the game performance a lot? Like will I be able to play on larger maps and stuff? right now I can only play on a small map. I am hoping the RAM upgrade will allow me to play MP. I am computer illiterate basically though, so I dont know if too little Ram is really causing me the problem or not. Input needed!

From what I have read on that Saturn, yes more RAM will help. It takes more ram in order to play on larger maps. More RAM is a good investment , imo, as it will also improve other computer activites, like serfing the net as well.

Your 386 is only good for small maps at best and even then later in the game it will cause problems, yes another 512 would help alot.

Another 512 would definietly help. I was playing on my 512mb RAM laptop for a bit and the game was a little slow. Moving up to 1 gig I've had no problems at all. So somewhere in between would be good also. www.tigerdirect.com, I bought a 512 stick of ram from them about 3 weeks ago for $20 If you check around for special deals you can usually get some cheap stuff.

Another rather cheap place to buy computer hardware is www.pricewatch.comOn a side note I only have a niVidia Ge Force 4 MX 4000 video card and 256 RAM so I dont play anything bigger than a small map but it all works fine for me in sp and mp

I upgraded. I have almost 900 mb's of RAM now. Yet I just tried to play a mp game, and I still couldnt connect off the launch. It just says "waiting on players" to join the game and gives me the option to quit or play on. I should not be having this problem, I cant seem to figure it out. Any suggestions?

Drop and try to hotjoin. we used this in testing with some folks with similar computers. I am sorry you can not play MP at the moment, will miss the fun.

This is disgracefull! The developers should not release the game if it only works on the high-end systems that were bought yesterday.

I noticed two issues that i haven't seen mentioned yet:
1. Hot re-join When I try to hotjoin back into a running game, that I just have been in, it happens repeaditly that the game gets frozzen at the moment i rejoin. The other players in the game stated, that the game continued normally as soon as I retired form the game. As mentioned I had no problems to join that game when it started.
2. OCC by AI In an OCC (one city challange option enabled) a player got replaced by AI, because he quit. We all where surprised that the AI was building cities as hell, while all others have not been able to build settlers :-). I think the AI should also stick to the OCC rules. I have not tested whether he sticks to it, when AI is playing right of the start.
Cheers, Masinissa

One city only applies to human players, because in the SP world the challange of 0CC is that the AI can build cities and you can't. It's not perfect and I'm sure that a modder could make a variation for the ladder that AI can only build one city to take care of the hotjoins.\

Yesterday I tweaked the performance settings on my computer (they didnt change automatically after I added the ram upgrade) and the comp seems to be working better. I was able to launch into a mp game on a standard map with one human player and 4 AI's. This is very promising, as I wasnt even able to play a standard map on single player before. However I dont know if I will be able to launch into a game with any more human players than that.

I've found that I'm unable to stay connected to multiplayer games if I'm in Fullscreen. Try playing in a window - though it's a pain!!
