Having been called a noob so many times over the last month or so I thought it’s about time I confessed. I’m Stin. Before you say that ‘noob’ is the right word to describe me let me explain why I changed identity after having the same name for 3 years.
I was getting really fed up with Civ. The game was getting samey but more to the point I was not enjoying it anymore. I would finish games and be left with a feeling of frustration and annoyance rather than pleasure which a game of any kind should engender.
Therefore after 3 years or so of non stop civ I decided to take a complete break. It lasted for about 6 weeks and then I was bored one evening so I reloaded all discs and patches and came back.
It was at the time of the most recent thread started by a noob who was complaining about not getting into teamers after having just joined the ladder. So I thought I would try a little experiment. I would come back with new name and I would pick a girls name to see if that made a difference to how I was treated.
I started with a few ctons and did all the usual noob tricks. Chose silly civs and shouted ‘go’ as soon as I [x] the box. I played like a prat for half the game and then went on a point spree for last 50 turns and won most ctons. Then I thought I would try a ladder teamer. I asked if I could play. I got the usual stuff about being a ‘noob’ and ‘you will unbalance the teams’.
I was surprised though that I got into most games that I asked to get into. Most ladder hosts were polite and gave me a chance. I was booted from 1 or 2 but even then I was told why first. A couple of times a sub was asked for and I volunteered only to be passed over for a player who was more experienced. Some I had never heard of.
Anyway my experiment has proved to me a couple of things that people new to the ladder should be aware of. Most ladder players are decent. If you ask nicely then you get a pleasant reply. If you constantly IM them and then give them a verbal bashing for not allowing you in you only make it worse for yourself. As has been said in a number of threads the way to get accepted in the best games is to be a good player with decent manners (there are some exceptions). That takes time and patience.
