I am more of a FFA player, so I don't enjoy team games much. However, all the ladder FFA games tend to be CTON, which takes away from the diplomatic and resource trading aspect, is it possible to just have a regular FFA ladder game?

These used to be the rage, but some people played and only cared about rank hunting. Some times it would be a 7 on 1 situation. But I agree it would be nice to see more FFAs.

Indeed. It is quite possible to have what was once the norm, ffa style matches. A sudden revolt was brought up by a poula insurgant; a civ 3 player named (can you guess?) cton. With this revolt a new trend was started. No longer were the aspects of diplomacy availible. The never knowing when your good neighbors would suddendly send an atack upon you! Seemingly sacred of this threat, a growing number of players turned to the dark side.
well, if you host it, they will come, maybe.
I would make it clear b4 game what a (true) ffa is(free for all) as I imagine most would not know what it really is about.

I believe Bopper regularly hosted island FFA games. Is he still around?

well, if you host it, they will come, maybe. Oh people will come Ray, people will most definitely come. Host most anything and people will try it once or twice. I've played a few ladder FFAs and they were pretty fun, a nice change of pace for sure. A lot of backstabbing, so watch out behind you!

For me a FFA would need a slower timer like fast or medium, which will mean slower game and some won''t like that. I have seen some play some blazing FFA's but you hardly ever have time to communicate with anyone. Thats not fun to me, might as well just do cton and not have to worry about pre game alliances and backstabbing. Others would think it too slow, I would guess and not play a slower timer, so you will loose one group or the other in FFA games.
Also FFA is for epic games IMO. People host epics some times but usually announce it in this forum a week before hand. I would play those if it's at a time the fits into my window of playing time.

[KC]Bopper does indeed host FFA games called ' Ladder Bop Pirates', an FFA type islands game. Played in a cpl and is pretty fun- but yes be aware too as lots of backstabbers! These games allowed private chat, tech trading etc.. although It seemed that perm alliances were not allowed for whatever reasons ( host didn't check the option-- maybe).
This was before the latest OCC rage, however. I see him hosting OCC type games now.

I think permanent alliances is a tricky setting to use in an FFA. It puts two players basically in a team where they will always be listed as the top team because their score is now the total of the two scores. Kind of a like an unbalanced teamer (2v1 or whatever) teamer where the disadvantaged team needs a kill to win.

Well since PA's don't happen until Facsisim it's not a option in most ladder games unless it's a late era start FFA or a Epic.

I will host a ladder FFA right after I reinstall my civ4 and has the admin reissue my ladder membership again.
