Firaxis really does want to fix the retire bug, and they need our help. Please open your ini file and set "SynchLog = 1". Then if you are in a game and your game experiences a freeze from someone retiring please email me all the synchlogs from every player in the game. The more data we have on this issue the better chance we have of solving it.

CS is this for real? all you have to do install this game, get a MP game going, and hit alt-Q in the first couple turns and it will trigger. It will take maybe 5-10 mins after installation to "recreate" this game freeze. is Firaxis so incompetent they don't know how to test their own game??? i see this bug ruin games EVERY single day.. happen to me 1 time already today. it's so easy to recreate... shocking to me that they need support from community to see it happen... half the people that do this are noobs and have no clue... we are supposed to hunt them down for their logs ?? every player in the game ?? lol /weak

Weak we tried today reproducing the retire bug with 3 players and hitting alt + q. Didnt get it working in 30 minutes of testing. Im really trying hard to get logs of this because i know it exists and ive seen it many times myself.

Could be that it may require more than 30 minutes of testing
I did the tests that I was asked to do 10 days ago and it took many full games of +2 hours each
I forwarded many saves, as specifically requested; I wasn't asked to forward logs. I guess that person asked for the wrong thing.

I belive they have stopped Alt + Q in the new patch, you cant retire like this anymore after you get killed.
When you select exit to main menu or desktop, i belive this is how it is caused, beacuse it still shows playerxxx has retired.

Yes the inside testers have not been able to reproduce this, so they are asking for our help, simple as that. It's not much to ask for you to enable logging since this bug happens quite regularly in ladder MP games. Anything we can do to help fix our game is in our best interest.

I'll do it, seems easy enough, what's the beef here? I don't play that often atm though so don't expect much from me. As a foot note I have never had connection issues except once with Red phoenix for some bizarre reason and I tihnk that was his end anyway. I realy don't get why people are having so much trouble, I never drop lag out, I have players lag on me when I host sometimes, I can always get into a game and I never find trouble reconnecting? As to why this is is anyones guess, I certainly have no idea.

CS Given the incredible amount of problems, its no surprise the "inside" testers cant find it. If they would stop playing civ and start testing the game maybe we would get somewhere. I think Firaxis should FIRE the entire testing team and start over,, they obviously dont "get" it. One thing I've noticed is if you die, WAIT a few turns to leave.. If you leave on the turn you die it will surely freeze. I wouldn't be surprised if all the "inside" testers were running this on clean systems Something EA learned the hard way when I worked for them, testing a game on a virgin system isn't testing.

Well Zerza you can critize Firaxis all you want, that isn't going to solve the problems we have, they are not ignoring us as you seem to think, why is it so hard to enable logging to help fix a game that we want to play? If people put half as much effort into helping fix our problems as they do to complaining about them, maybe Firaxis would have the data to resolve and fix our bugs.
And I don't think there methods are at fault for not finding the bugs themselves, you can't reproduce the internet on a company LAN. These are not game mechanics bugs they are networking bugs.
So we have two choices, abandon Civ4 MP or help fix it's problems and adapt to the problems that exist. I prefer the latter just as we did with PTW/C3C. Perhaps with "Civ5" we will get a Server/Client model without GS, but until then we are always going to be at the mercy of the elements.

Inside the INI File make sure you also turn Logging=1 as well as the SynchLog=1. After that, restart your Civ. If you succeed in reproducing the Retire Bug, make sure you send the file the starts with the word "network" (send to Canuck). These files will be found in the Log folder (My Documents\My Games\Civ..\Log).

I read this thread earlier today and really wanted to try to help out. But I was lazy and didn't bother to change the .ini file. Well, guess what happened. Thats right, my very next game had the good ol retire bug. I felt like such a schmuck. I am about to try to figgure out what I can do to help out with this problem and I would like to encourage everyone else to do so as well, before you play your next game.
When I went to alter my .ini file, I encountered several issues which confused me. I thought I would share exactly what you need to do to help out here.
First of all, the default path where you can find the .ini file is: c:/program files/firaxis games/sid meier's civilization 4/ (assuming you installed the game to the default location)
The specific name of the .ini file is _civ4config so double left click on it. That will open up the notepad program. You will want to scroll down about 2/3 of the way to the bottom until you see the following:
; Enable the logging system [glow=red,2,300]LoggingEnabled = 0[/glow]
; Enable synchronization logging [glow=red,2,300]SynchLog = 0[/glow]
; Overwrite old network and message logs [glow=red,2,300]OverwriteLogs = 0[/glow]
; Enable rand event logging [glow=red,2,300]RandLog = 0[/glow]
; Enable message logging [glow=red,2,300]MessageLog = 0[/glow]
change all the 0's to 1's in these five variables and then left click file, then left click save in the upper left corner of the notepad program.
I realize not everyone requires instructions as specific as this, but this is my big dummies guide to helping fix the retire bug.
