Hello:
It seems to me like the formats for the ladder games have polarized into either shorter, intense formats or the long epic games. But many players online like myself prefer a type of mini-epic lasting 4,5, 6, 7'ish hours or more. Ladder players often are reluctant to play such games because of the time investment and the fact the game's only worth one win, although I wish to be quick to note that they can often be found playing online for periods of up to 8,9 hours at a time anyway, just in several shorter games! So the end result is that there is a category of very good players who play long games who are not too interested in joining the ladder. I know because I am a leading host for these types of games and have dozens of buddies online I regularly play with, many of whom are not ladder for this reason... they like long games, not short intense ones. Most of us love the epic games, but as can be seen from Canuck's thread it is nearly impossible to re-organize a group of more than 3-4 people to continue an epic.
My suggestion is simple and I hope obviously intuitive: make a category for mini-epics, set at normal game speed, with half the victory markers of the full epics, so for example the first victory at 500 BC, etc, on to 2020 or whatever for the 5th victory marker. I would be the first to host such games online regularly on the weekends. I think this might restore the flavor of these types of games to ladder play, while still rewarding the players who like to invest this kind of time in a single game. It would create a strong impetus for good quality, long games without quitters, which was the original intent of ladder play.
Will Await Your Responses.
