Hey guys, i recently got a netgear wrg614v5 router to replace an older netgear router i had. So far i have been unable to connect to known good clients despite setting the dmz to my pc and turning off windows firewall. Screenshots so you can see that it simply doesn't work First my lan ip Now forwarding has been setup to this ip Still not connecting so i turn off windows firewall Still not connecting so i set the DMZ to my pc And guess what? - Still wont connect to games with more than 1 other player, even on known good peers (lporiginalg) This still happens after turning off the modem+router+pcs, leaving them for a while and turning them back on again. Also the router has the latest firmware. Router log shows no blocked packets btw and i have been able to play civ4 multiplayer before i changed routers, it seems there is some conflict between this router and civ4. So it seems i can't play civ4 in more than a 1v1...

This may seem a bit of a noob reply but did you remember to forward port 2056 to all both udp and tsp? and wireless routers really suck when playing civ make sure you use the wired connection wireless lags quite a lot in civ dont know why but it does i tried wireless once and the only port i have open is 2056 not sure if you need the others

Bantams yeah i forwarded the ports for both tcp and udp And Canuck I had actually got the 1.09 firmware didn't seem to help at that time... But i now have it all working at least in a game i played yesterday where i was the last to join. No idea why it is working now and not earlier - i had tried multiple resets before, civ4 (or the router) seemed determined not to work no matter what i did before though.

Question why are you port forwarding ports to your pc and putting your pc into the DMZ ? the DMZ makes that machine wide open all ports are open and port forwarding selectivly opens ports for a specified ip which is much safer and I highly suggest that method. btw when you port forward make sure the pc your fowarding to does not use dhcp to get an ip from the router ,but instead specify a static ip by opening "control panel" - "network connections" - select the adapter your using left click on it and select properties - click on tcp/ip in the menu and click properties and fill in the blanks with your network information You can get a list of ports civ needs from the forums on my site hereand you can still use a software firewall on the pc just use zonealarm it's user friendly and you can give a specific app complete access to the net as a client ,server or both.

Yep netgear routers have an option to assign specific IPs to each PC based on the MAC address which was already done. The DMZ and turning off the software firewall was simply a last resort (hence the 'Still not connecting so i turned on the DMZ and turned off the software firewall' in my first post) - it simply wasnt working with those ports forwarded before.

Hmm from what I read you did everything correctly then and placing your pc in the DMZ should have worked without a hitch. Perhaps you can get more info on port forawaring with that router at www.portforward.com

Yep happened again today, could not join any game with more than 1 player. Rebooted router, modem, PC, still didn't work, ended up plugging the computer straight into the modem and it worked fine from there on.
I'm starting to wonder if netgears have some issue with multiple IP addresses communicating on the one port.

I'm starting to wonder if netgears have some issue with multiple IP addresses communicating on the one port. Hmm that would be one hell of a flaw in their code as it kinda defeats the purpose of the router ,but I would seriously suggest you atleast run a software firewall if your going online with a direct connection to the modem. BTW if this router has upnp turn it off and give that a try it helps with some routers and apps also so a hard reset of the router to set it to all the defaults and forget assigning static ips via mac address just tell windows what ip to use on your network adapter. You want to use as few functions on the router as possiable to make sure you have no config conflicts. This is one reason I am happy with my network config I have a wired router and a wireless access point connected to it to provide wireless access where needed and I hope to cut down on that wireless need soon by pulling more cat 5 around the house it's just faster and more stable.

I'm still getting problems with connecting that require me removing the router (so straight PC->modem) to play with some people.
I have found a definite bug in Civ4 though. If i start Civ4 go to Direct IP connection, join a pitboss game, make my move for the day and exit that game i cannot connect to any games in the multiplayer lobby without a restart. 100% repeatable.

Yesterday at 7pm uk time i had the connection problems where you cant join any games with 2 or more ppl in but so did most the other ppl in the lobby
so maybe its not a fault with youre router just youre time zone happens to fall at the same time as gayspy plays up
also im on my third router now because i thought the others were at fault originally but that wasnt the case
tried two speedtouch routers and now im on a wannadoo livebox

Yeah Bantams, that is a possibility, sometimes it works fine other times it doesn't despite the fact that i play with the same players (there's only a small group of us that play at Australian times).

You could always try to get your group to use hamachi to play civ it'a quite easy and very stable.
