My firewall blocks incoming ping traffic by default.
Its not a scientific study or anything, but I believe I have noticed a significant decrease in bad peer problems when I enable pings from the WAN.
Now I was under the impression that enabling pings to come in reduced my security.
Can anyone knowledgeable on this topic let me know if I am imagining things or if incoming pings are used in the Gamespy Connection Process.

Well I don't think that allowing or disallowing a "ping" query effects the GS NAT process, but on the other hand allowing pings doesn't in itself represent any security hole. Ping is just a command that allows other computers on the internet to "see" your computer and measure the latency and packet loss. Now if you disallow pings you will likely appear as "unknown" when you host a game in the lobby, which might cause confusion for other players.
