I don't know how Civ does it but sometimes after someone dropping from the game i'm noticing a severe lag (mouse becomes less responsive etc) but i still do see other's chat in Civ 4. Internet connection shows a high traffic and in 10-12 seconds i'm losing a connection to internet. Recently i looked at the firewall and watched Civ generating outgoing traffic of 100 kbytes/second to 2 other players. In just several seconds it increased to 1 mbyte/second to both players and Civ 4 as well as other connections like xfire dropped. Firefox wasn't able to connect to anything as well. But connection to internet still remained and showed about 20 kb/second incoming traffic (no outgoing after i terminated Civ 4). After that, only turning off power on an ADSL modem helps. If i just disconnect an internet connection and try to connect again, it says "no responce" so i guess Civ 4 somehow hangs my ADSL modem in a process.
The funny thing is that maximum possible outgoing traffic over my ADSL is equal to 100 kbytes/second (and it should be limited by provider to 50 kbytes/second according to my tariff). I never experienced something like that when playing other games over internet or just when playing Civ 4 as usual. It may happen only when i do see a "Waiting" screen after someone dropped.

I'll point the Civ4 MP programmer at this thread and see what he thinks.

Elle I have noticed that same issue a few times and even had to block some of the ofending addresses that showed in my firewall. Sometimes they have nothing to do with the players that you're conected to. However, I did also find that I seemed to get traffic from people I had played in previous games and I wonder if that has anything to do with the 'slot information not cleared' issue. And since some programmer is supposed to be looking at this thread: I have noticed that if another program is active in the backgound (a firewall alert caused me to notice this) and someone leaves a game, the event does not register for the player who's firewall or other program, e.g., msn interupted. I'm not sure that this is also true for the start bugs where there is also a freeze when starting. By the way, if it is true they they will be bringing out an expansion pack before fixing the bugs in the game, we shall have to check with the existing players as to whether some awareness campaign is required. In England we have a principle that states that goods should be fit for their purpose. antointhe I don't know how Civ does it but sometimes after someone dropping from the game i'm noticing a severe lag (mouse becomes less responsive etc) but i still do see other's chat in Civ 4. Exactly the same problem here, it happens to me when someone retires and i leave and try to rejoin. My network connection starts to get flooded upon reconnnecting to the lobby. I noticed this month i had used 30GB in the first few days, i am now running on a slower 64kbps connection so i can tell when my connection gets flooded or DOS attacked (my cable connection drops to 64kbps after 30GB is hit). It happens in Civ4 in the situation described above.
Btw I had to change my external IP address to stop the flooding as it seemed to just keep coming even after resetting the computer.
