Hi guys, I'm new to the forum but I've been encouraged by the helpful responses I've seen here. I'd like to share my problem in the hopes of working towards a solution and expanding the general knowledge base.
The goal is to play Civilization 4 with my brother; that is one of the main reasons I bought the game. However, we cannot connecct to each other when hosting on Gamespy, and cannot connect to each other when trying Direct IP. We get stuck at "contacting host" and then it times out; we have tried every hosting combination we can.
We are both behind Linksys routers and running Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Here are the fixes I have already tried: After some initial research, I ran across the list of required TCP ports posted by Canucksoldier and also on the Gamespy webpage. Both my brother and I opened our Windows firewall and manually opened the 2056 UDP port as well as the entire list of TCP ports Gamespy requires, minus the Voice Chat port (not required???). Immediately after opening these ports, I hosted and my brother was able to join easily. We played with no problems (and a lot of fun) for a few hours.
The next day, we had time to play again so I hosted (I have the faster machine) our saved game. However, my brother was unable to join; same errors as before; he could see the game, attempt to enter it, enter the password, but then would time out connecting to host. Frustrating beyond belief! Especially since it worked the day before and the same fixes are still applied (as far as I can tell).
Neither of us have really messed with our router settings, just the windows firewall settings; is the combination Windows firewall + router killing us somehow, and if so then how did it work once but not again? I am open to any and all thoughts or advice.
Neither of us have any technical issues at all, the game runs great in both SP and MP once we can get connected.
EDIT: I would like to distance myself from any rants or complaints that may follow... while I sympathize with the frustration, I'm more interested in seeking solutions and I appreciate the hard work of the developers and testers
