I picked up the pre-ordered, special edition today. The install failed about 4 times. Each failure occurred in a different part of the install procedure. On the fifth try all of the files loaded. Each time however I got a message for the DirectX install part of "A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted" WTF does that mean? The first time I hit the desktop icon the message came up that the program cannot load because it can't find D3DX9_26.DLL. I recognize this as a DirectX file. In searching my documents and settings folder I found this file in 4 different sub-folders. I copied it to the firaxis games folder and tried to launch the game. The first goofy thing that happened is that the game reports that I don't have the proper CD in the drive. I have the Disc 2/PLAY in there as instructed in the manual. I stick in the Disc 1/Install CD in there and it loads. The intro movie runs fine and everything looks good. I try to load an SP game and go through all of the setup options. When the program tries to generate the map I get a long hang and then the following" I have a 128 MB Nvidia GeForce4 TI 400 with the latest driver. The manual has several references to the "technical reference section", which is non-existent

What ammount of memory do you have whip in your machine 256mb or 512mb.
What size map did you try to generate standard for 8 civs or something bigger.
Also being a betatester you aught to post this up on the beta forum.

I had trouble with install
I ran MSCONFIG and disabled all but 2 of my startup programs. All was fine after that.
I tried to run MP in GS but have been unable to connect at all. "Login attempt failed" at least 10 times.
Doesn't matter anyway's as I can't play MP. I just wanted to see what was going on in the chat room.

Second attempt was a tiny map and it just froze. Third attempt at timy map again and it ran.

Ghost, I am not sure if I understand your post, but the disks are mislabelled. You must put in disk 1 to play the game.

Yes Take2 miss labeled the CD's it's disk one that you need in the drive to play. Also you if you have more than one optical drive you must use the same drive to install both disks or it gets confused.
Neal, it obvious that the DX version on the CD didn't install properly, I would uninstall CIV and try from scratch. Let me know what specific errors if any you get during the install and what specific steps you did before it happened, also if you email me your DXdiag txt file I'll give it too Firaxis as well.

My CIV game is now in Edmonton ;p So today or tommorow at the latest I'll be better able to help people with installation issues, right now I'm just having to use the experiences of other testers that have the game.

Oh this sounds promising. Already gonna need a patch even before you play the game.
BTW, how is it that some people have already gotten the game and yet its not in stores yet, well atleast not by me?

I pre-ordered the Special Edition from EBgames and they called me tell me that it had arrived. When I went to retrieve it the clerk told me that they had many irate people who were not able to buy the game because EBgames had not yet received the regular edition.

Hmmm, that D3DX9_26.dll file is about the only thing I can come up with for the source of my problem. I see this file under C:/windows/system33/D3D......., yet when I run dxdiag I don't see this file in the list of Directx files. All other files are there.

I believe that you can run the dxsetup off the CD again without running the game setup. Sounds like it might not have got registered with windows.

If I were buying a new card I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 9600 and preferably a 9800(pro). Problem with the 9550 is it was designed for DX8 and for shaders vs 1.0, and what CIV really needs is a DX9 Card with shaders 2.0 support. Yes you can install DX9 with a older DX8 card but that doesn't mean you will get 100% support for your game :-( I'm in the Strat guide am I? Guess I'll have to buy it now :-P CS

Laptops tend to be less tolerant because in the past laptops were not considered by computer manufactures as "gaming rigs", that changed now ofcourse but many older laptops had weaker video chips. But one can hope. CS

It installed just fine on my laptop, but runs slow. Cant imagine it getting better in MP. Definately not playable at this speed even in SP.
And yes my cpu exceeds the requirements.
