So I was playing in a 1v1v1v1 ancient tourny with blazing timer when somehow i accidently turned on bare-map mode. For those of you unfamiliar with this setting as I was it makes all units on the map invisible as well as build cues (shortcut cntrl+b). I didn't know what was going on I thought maybe it was a warlords bug or something at first so I paused the game so I could sort it out. I told the players my units all disapeared and that I was gonna take a screenshot in case it was a bug. I took screenshot and when I alt_tabbed back in after saving my shot (about 20 secs later) the game had been unpaused and I lost one turn. I paused again and told player not to unpause but he didn't speak very good english and thought I was condused about some unit that had actualy died, so he just unpaused it again while I was going through the map options trying to figure out what I did, that caused me to lose a worker sice i had invisible enemies in my land and didn't know where my units where and my city wasn't building anything anyay...blahblahblah
Anyway I talked to the TD about it and later the head TD and they both just kinda shrugged and chuckled and denied any knowledge of any rules regarding pauses.
I know some you reading this are going to say 'well it's your own damn fault lp your the neb who doesn't know how to quick switch in and out of bare-map mode' and sure you have a valid point, but look at the bigger picture, i could've had a real life emergency goin on like maybe i dropped my lit joint on my croch and my pants cought on fire, hey, happens to the best of us. What I sugges is some kind of formal rule be put in place to at least clarify this scenario.
I mean the really aggravating thing for me is the guy who kept unpausing was in the last game to finish of round1 and we all set around waiting for him for 30 mins because he was having lag/drop issues in his game, then he can't even give me 1 min so i can figure out how to see units in the game. throw me a fricken bone here.

Well if this poll gets alot of votes, the admin team will consider the results in making a decision on this issue.
During the development of Civ4 I did try to get the game hosts more "hardcoded" powers to controll decisions in the game, but for various reasons it wasn't included. Things like a veto on pausing the game and continuing or waiting for dropped players etc. This would help solve "human" issues like what you had happen.

there are dudes voting for no pauses? Sure u pause if there s a ingameissue, but u should tell people before pausing or right after why u pause. I also d never have a problem to have a short pause for some personal problems, there are persoal needs door bells broken glasses are whatever, in the end we all play for fun in a fair sportive environment - once we only play for winning ladder spirit ll die even more

I was the Head TD LP originally spoke to so I thought I should throw my two cents in. You certainly cannot make a rule that you absolutely cannot pause at all durring a game. Nor does this poll adaquately cover all the possibilities for how many times a game a player may pause and for how long. (which is why I didn't vote)
If I were to cast a vote in a poll, my vote would be three pauses per game of no more than five minutes each for each team.
In civ3, they were wise enough to limit the number of times a player could pause the game. Foolishly, in civ4, they forgot about that little detail and it sometimes gets abused in non-ladder games by disgruntled losers.
I am perplexed when it comes to what to do when your opponent unpauses the game before you are able to resolve whatever issue caused you to pause. It might fall under the umbrella of "bad sportsmanship" unless you throw in the confusion caused by multi-lingual games. I suspect the only course of action is to publically ask for permission to pause and get all the players to acknowledge that they will wait for you BEFORE you actually pause.

I can understand the pause when a personal problem comes up, a computer issue, food delivery guy, important phone call, ring of the door, dog needs to go to the bathroom, an emergency bathroom break, etc. However, although I wasn't in this game, I heard the most outrageous story about a pause ever -- a guy actually paused a ladder game for over 10 minutes to take a bath because he felt he was smelly. Now that is absolutely ridiculous!

1. I was not have lag/drop issue in first game. we played 130 turns and won on score. in wot relation is final game and mine first game when u waiting 30 min. It is normal in tourney. 2. In final we have move lag cca 15sec every turn -i quess it is on purpose. 3. I dont understanded why u beaching. U talking about invisible units etc.. never heard. U beachined about lost batlle. U lost worker before pause bc lag move isuess. We listened u 5 min then i unpaused game. U dotn talked cool and explain prob u was bitching to all and yourself. U was rude in game. Thats why i unpased. Then u left and beachign in loby to.Also u dont ask that u will pausing game. Yes pause game when exist normal reason. In life emergecy just left comp and forget game and report. I played alot of games and saw 1o different reason when player lost and beaching and pausng game and finaly quit without report.

Here's the screenshot I took as soon as it happened cause at first I thought maybe it was a bug. If I can't be seen here saying that all my units disapeared and if that isn't a valid reason to pause for a sec I don't know what I should've said. But all you did was reply 'scout' and then unpause while I was alt=tabbed out to save my screenshot. I came back and told you again that my units were invisible and please don't unpause but you just did it again costing me two turns on the blazing timer.

I hope I'm not giving out too much info here but I usually take a good crap every other game I play and have never paused the game for said break. I cant explain why, I guess CIV makes me feel content and relaxes me. So that being said, pauses annoy me unless real emergency. So just remember that next time you are in a game with me I may be pinching a loaf on the thrown at that time.

Couldent vote on this one, as options does not tell why you pause. But i think its allways ok to pause on a game issue (like this one), mouse batteries, or to solve problem with general civ preformance (should we rehost or try reconnect if game slow ect.)
Or if you got a personal problem off any kind. But if more than 2-3 min. Say got this problem got to leave, and go report ! I think its wrong to pause to get drink or food and stuff like that, you just have to end turn fast, and run too kitchen or toilet. (thats healty too!)
I you need toilet for the big "thing" might be ok to ask politely if others would kindly wait for a few minutes.

a player should ask the host to pause the game - no one else should be pausing it or unpausing it.
