About 2 weeks ago, I got tired of quitters and morons and decided to join the ladder, which proved to be very rewarding. Something I noticed, though, seems to be that "cton" rules seem to be the default game type among ladder players. I haven't seen a single game NOT using them. So my question is, does anyone ever play without them? Without "always war" on? When I play my friends, we always play "classic" games of civ, with diplomacy and trade etc. Is there any interest in playing such games or am I alone out there?

My friends and I also play "classic" civ when we play.
I wouldn't mind such with ladder players if - and only if - all the players could be trusted to play to win to the best of their ability.
Even in game systems that include ranking, there are a suprising number of people who do not play to win and thus throw the game balance for everyone else.
The Diplomacy community (www.diplom.org) has gone round and round on this issue.

Well, I'd love to play games like that. I like to "roleplay" my civ a bit, and take diplomacy seriously (ie not signing a deal and then breaking it 2 turns later, or team up, timing research to skyrocket in tech). For example, I usually try to have a "casus belli" before going to war, not just attacking a random neighbor because an opportunity arises. It's just so much more fun to bully them into paying tribute ;D ;D ;D

The ladder supports any kinda of MP game that a group of players wants to play. Yes the normal random lobby games are 3-4 hour limited turn games normally with X-city elim as a option. But we also support PBEM/Pitboss game via our forums, and we have contructed a special rules set for ladder Epic games and have a forum dedicated to them if you want to organize a long multi-session MP game.
If it's Civ4 and can be played by humans you can report it on the ladder.
