DaggerJones/Metallian and I were just talking and he came up with what I think is a great idea -- can we, as a ladder, enter some sort of agreement with CFC and Apolyton to better promote the ladder? How about a nice link on the main website? Or at the very last some nice sticky announcement threads on their forums?
I have to imagine that everyone who plays Civ4 is interested in multiplayer on some level. However, if they try to play a few open games with rampant connection problems and quitters, many of them must become pretty discouraged before they even discover the ladder.
The ladder definitely needs to grow, and this could be a great way to do so.

Yes if you look at our main page you find a link to poly at the bottom of the menu. Also you find a link back here from the CIV4 sectin at Poly. That's about as far as it went in the talks.

Yes even before Civ4 was released, I talked with MarkG of Apolyton about co-operation, we oficially agreed to many things, but the fact of life is that poly and CFC are SP sights and other than PBEM and some pitboss games, they are wholely not competitive MPers, especially poly. Yhe only thing that came out of it was us and poly are each others affilate sights, and if you look at he poly MP group you will find that I am the "leader". I advertised CCC 33 at both sights, and I recieved one reply, and less than 100 views......sad. There are a small group of cross over SP/MP players like Gogf and Speaker, but they are the minority. I do post at both sights in hopes of attracting some players to MP, but to be honest most people interested in MP are found in the lobby after they press that mysterious "multiplayer" button If you guys have idea's about how to appeal to the large SP fan sights I'm certainly listening. But please continue to be good ambasadors for the ladder in the lobby and in your staging rooms. CS

You can add me to that list of SP players that are now MP players Canuck. I swore I would never enter the MP round when I got Civ3. But after doing some exploring and reading up in the Forum you had in Civ3 and Appolyton comments I decided to hit that "mysterious" multiplayer button and give it a try. What I found where two gentleman willing to help me out. Wolfen and Avogrado. Both played a couple of games with me and also helped me learn some of the basics in order to play the game at a competitive level in MP. I then ran into another, BeastMaster, and again got more help on what to do and what not to do. To the best of my knowledge, These 3 where some of the best at that time at Civ 3. Other than the post I have seen by Tommynt about helping others in 1 v 1, I don't see that kind of ladder spirit in Civ4 . Maybe if more tryed to help out the noobs, the first timers, and understand or at least remember how it is to be a noob, we would have more joining and staying in the ladder instead of joining, playing one game and then never trying it again. A list of others that where a great help to me all through civ3 are Muhachi, Bonez, Assedix,RedDragon, heroray, Cleangarp, Lestat, GCReptile, mezi, DeathToAll, ScoobyNTN, Levi, Sobela, and way too many others. You don't have that kind of support and comradery here yet in Civ4. Hopefully it is on it's way.

I hope so too, laststand, but that Civ3 community that helped you was 2.5 years old, I hope we get to that point in Civ4 soon, but I do see a healthy progression, and considering that we are less than 1 year old I think we are on the right track. We have the organization, but getting the critical mass of mature veteran players takes a bit longer.

As one of the aformentioned converters, I found multiplayer to be far more addicting than I expected. Playing against the AI is fun from a totally different persepective. Single player is more of a role-playing game (although that kind of thing usually doesn't interest me at all) while multiplayer is much more similar to a really complicated game of chess. In single player you can get away with a lot of stuff you couldn't in multiplayer, but the experience is much more relaxing, at the least.
After I started playing multiplayer, it was literally impossible for me to go back to single player. The occasional game might interest me, but it's nothing compared to the fun of multiplayer. The competitiveness of the ladder was what drew me in, as I was sick of playing against really bad players in nonladder games. The single player people at those forums won't want to necessarily jump right into the ladder, but they may be interested in multiplayer. The key is getting them to try it in a place where there aren't quitters, or the usual jerks found in nonladder games.

Maybe a complete, clear and simple "Guide to Civ4 MultiPlayer" posted on these forums could explain what they can find in the mysterious "MultiPlayer" section. Or a story from a former "solo mode only" player like gogf explaining how he jumped to playing against real competitors
