I really think this obsession with secrecy is daft. Reassuring players - otherwise known as paying customers - that their problems are being addressed and giving useful detail as to how is exactly the sort of sensible and helpful thing that Firaxis should do.
Whereas they set a policy that treats the changelog for the latest beta patch as somehow important confidential information. God forbid we might know in advance the contents of the latest patch. What terrible mischief we might cause!
(Disclaimer: this is a criticism of Firaxis, not Fried, who has to play by their rules)

It's not that the release notes would cause chaos, but you wouldn't beleive how much flack Firaxis could get if some of the proposed changes turn out to be problematic and don't actually get included right away, first thing you'd get is some irate customer phoning Take2 Support asking why *his/her* worst issue was left out when it was in the beta release notes The past experience of almost all gaming companies is to work at fixing all problems but don't make any promises until after the patch CS

This is a marketplace full of (literally) immature customers and their atitudes. Firaxis will get flack whatever they do. That's no reason to punish the silent majority of their customers for the behaviour of the noisy minority. (And my bet, backed up by no evidence whatsoever, is that instead of Take2 support gettting lots of phone-calls about "why didn't the patch fix my problem like you promised", they will now be getting lots of phone-calls about "when the hell is there going to be a patch and what problems will it fix")
And Firaxis were quite happy to publicly advertise features that they then couldn't deliver (e.g. Pitboss) when it came to attracting my money.
Please don't mistake this for an anti-Firaxis or anti-CIV rant. I just find this particular policy stupid and annoying.

Well unfortunately the PR/legal machines get involved, and Soren or Jesse are not above that level of red tape, the simple post by Soren about firewall/router issues was not a simple process to be released. Comapanies don't like to admit officially that there are problems, even as there programmers are trying to fix them CS Edit: Also remember that Firaxis is now just a "design house" for Take2 Games, so it has creative freedom, but I imagine it's PR freedom is alot less now.

yes it's a sad enditement of the world we live in that you can sue someone at the drop of a a hat for implying that something would be fixed in an alpha press release and then when the beta press release turns up have 100 law suits for breach of promise turn up, but hey the worlds a sad place. America sues too much and England appears to be headed the same way. E.g in my place of work the windows are not allowed to be opened more than 2 inches in case someone throws themselves out, even if it is unbearably hot in summer. Idiotic rule you may think but if they let people throw themselves out of the window they could be sued for tempting people to suicide by the families? Utterly ridiculous and I work in a library, I admit my job isn't the best job in the world but If I feel like killing myself I'm sure I can run full pelt and do a flying head butt at a wall and end it all just as easily

Do sum work in that office instead of posting all day!
Even before CIV iV was released the beta-testers loved their little secret society, with little secret passwords and holding hands in cupboards!
Seems Fried is still getting a kick outa it...go delete another Thread or summin useful!

I mistakenly posted the 1.53 readme believing its release was imminent. As soon as the next patch (whatever it's called) is released to the general public, we will repost the information.
My bad.

Congratulations you have now raised the level of ignorance on this board significantly, I was going to try to actually try and post a educated response about the true nature of the beta test but I hate wasting my valuable time. All I can say is that it takes one uber A-hole to provoke a rebuke like that from CS

Thank you Daym I work damn hard and earn precious little(which is something that isn't unusual working in a hospital although wages aren't too bad now, but then alot of people who work here don't do it for the money) and when I do have some spare time, because the weather sucks, I like to idle away my hours going to forums or playing CIV, what I don't like is when someone rebukes you who knows absolutley nothing about you. Luckily though I have pretty broad shoulders. But thanks for the comment anyway.
