Lately in MP games I'm finding myself with early forges (usually from oracle), a high prod rate in my 4-5 cities, and being stuck without anything useful to build. After my first run in with this problem I started researching alphabet just so I could put some cities to research while waiting for something useful to build. This is great if I want to war early but many times I don't. Anyone else run into this? Do you set cities to 'research'? Still trying to work out a resonable plan to avoid ending up with 50 combat units or 30 workers running around with nothing to do.
Research path resulting in this problem goes something like this... meditation, bronze, agri, priesthood, wheel, pottery, (metal casting from oracle), animal, writing, (now alpha to avoid getting stuck), then on to construction / machinery.
I usually bog down approaching construction or machinery with nothing to build but axes/spears/etc which I already have enough of.

if ur so productive .... take 50 guys and attack and kill..... Wow, thanks a lot! Great idea! Seriously...I'm stuck building units which increases maint cost further reducing research rate. I guess I can switch citizens around in every city to maximize research and limit production during this period. Either that or assign cities to research.

or make gold to finance more cities and technologies. I often place to research but only late in game to grab those extre few techs or to get music asap

what i do sometimes in some games is decrease my sci when close to a tech. yeah the extra sci carry over but sometimes u need some gold to run acouple later techs at 100%. also skip acouple of the early techs that you don't need like fishing/sailing on lakes maps or inland sea sometimes. and then do them in last couple turns for acouple reasons. by doing that you get the tech within 2 to 3 turns at 50%sci(while at 50% culture increase or to gain some cash late for unit upgrades) and you gain some points from tech when others r doing the longer time frame techs.

it seems to me you dont build enough cottages - or maybe you build them but you donĀ“t let your citizens work on them. I would also suggest going for fishing and work on coast/lake tiles.
Btw, nice trick to research really well: go for great scientists and build academies.
