I saw this in the newbie tips: 'Watch your opponents in replays after the game is over'. I've played a few RTS games before and love watching the replays (especially their team chat as you play sneaky tricks on them ). But I can't for the life of me figure out how to watch replay's in CiV4. There is no option in the main or multiplayer menu to have anything to do with replays. There is no option after you beat everyone to watch a replay (hell you don't even get a 'grats'). So, umm ...How do you do it?

just be patient and wait for CivIX
note: won't really work when CivIX comes out, but it will be in the third patch for it.

When the game I last played to completion ended I had the option to view a replay that showed each major event. I think it is accessible from the hall of fame ?

Yes you can view the replay of any competed games(ones that reached a victory condition) from the Hall of Fame on the main menu.

I see. So the problem is then that games don't complete properly.
eg. if everyone leaves, and is replaced by AI, can I stop the game and watch the replay, or do I have to play it through to it's conclusion against the AI just to watch the replay?
Other games I have had everyone elses scores on 0 but the game didn't say 'grats u win' or anything so i just retired and went back to the lobby like usual. Afterwards I find I cannot seem to watch the replay even though I won.
On the other side of the coin, if I am defeated do I have to stick around until the game's conclusion just to watch the replay. My score is 0 so my game is over -surely I should now be able to view the replay right now??

No but he does have a valid point. That is one thing that c3c had better than CIV. The replays if you get to see them are kinda lame. It only shows borders. Not where you placed them Not what happened here what happened there. Nothing jsut goes along with the border expansions.
Alot of time was put into this game. So i understand that the replay wasn't on the top of the list. But i think adding it in on our next "patch" would be nice to have.

He's talking about an actual "replay" and not a "view histograph" kind of thing.
The closest thing Civ has for that is reloading a save and seeing the towns and units in one specific turn (with no movement/action) - without the plays themselves.

Yeah an 'Actual Replay' that you can view from the perspective of any player. You can see their build order, research order, etc You can see how they reacted to what you did and drastically improve your game (or just laugh @ their team chat as you whooped them ;D). I used to play Rise of Nations and it had the replay feature (I believe AoE had it aswell). The actions and camera movements were all saved to a rather tiny file which could be loaded through the game to watch a playback. You couldn't change the course of history so to speak, but simply view it as an observer (again, from any point of view you chose). You could also fast-foward or pause the game as you saw fit. You could open up the fog of war or follow someones view exactly (where were they looking when you attacked in 5 places @ once?). Even if people try to 'steal your strats' it doesn't mean they are adaptable players or that they have as good micro as yourself (and of course, you always know how to beat your own strats). It's great for players of all levels to be able to watch someone elses playstyle compared to their own, or perhaps in reaction to their own And there's also the possibility of ego posts accompanied by a replay file ;D So, umm ..I'm guessing it's not in the game then. I still haven't been able to find it. There's some useless blocky playback of your religion spreading, but I'm not sure why anyone would recommend you watch that -just watch the minimap during a replay ;D
