Somewhat of a comical typo ;-).

#1 vs #2 player in a game. #2 player requests to not be captain. Uh, what? Why do we even have rankings?

#1 vs #2 player in a game. #2 player requests to not be captain. Uh, what? Why do we even have rankings? Rankings as I understand them promote competition amongst players. Most ladder players aspire at some point in time to reach the top depending on how healthy or unhealthy their ego is determines 'how' the go about it :-). The ranking system is not perfect in that it is designed to encourage players to play more often or their rank will fall dramatically. This may be a government influenced design in order to keep people out of trouble and busy ;-) (Conspiracy theories from arv lol). Ranks are not specifically designed to determine who is a captain in a teamer - it is just a defacto standard used by the case ladder / civ4 culture. The best players may not always be the best choice for captain either. Captains must be respected players who have demonstrated leadership skills, talent, and knowledge. Not all elite players make good captains. It is unfair to force a player who is not 'captain' material to be a captain. Captain, in the staging area, means: he or she who selects team players or selects two teams for the other captain to choose. During play 'Captain' means the player who leads the team by directing efforts, instilling cohesiveness, encouraging team players, leveraging their skills or lack thereof, and so on. I have a short list of players whom I would say were/are great captains. Not all of them were ranked #1.

Recently trying to play a team game has become a huge joke. In the past few weeks I have witnessed Rank #2 on the ladder refusing to captain against Rank #1 as well as the second captain trying to get 3 picks in a row after the first captain's pick. I have seen games sit in staging for over an hour while people bitch and moan only to have everyone give up in frustration. This is just stupid. We've played by the system that highest rank is captain 1 and second highest rank is captain 2 for a year now. With the exception of highly ranked games in the top 10 or so where the top 2 ranks really need to be captains, I've seen many instances where players have volunteered to captain to make the game more competitive -- this is a fine practice and often benefits the player who steps up to be captain anyways. I don't understand why so many people have been flipping out about captains and teams so much of late -- it never seemed to be such an issue in the past -- we picked teams, we played, and we tried to have fun. Nowadays it seems that some players are more concerned with the politics of the staging room than actually playing the game. At the very least I have taken this opportunity to rediscover the joys of the cton. At least until players in ctons start complaining that it won't be a fair game and force some players to increase their difficulty level and / or pick a crappy civ instead of going random.

I just tend to go shuffle with random civs much more enjoyable than spending 1 hour in staging waiting for teams to be picked and then everyone leaves staging room because someone want to elrad and then they start all over again and bitch for another hour or two about the teams So Random Random Shuffle is the future IMO much more fun

After playing a 6v6 game where 6 of the best 7 players were on the other team and I was stuck with 4 "fat kids" and one other veteran player ... NEVER AGAIN! Not worth wasting my time on games like this .
