Anyone else feel this is a good idea? I mean non irrigated rice is 4 food, with irrigation 5. Something is missing here when u compare to other food sources. 6 is the standard for food source (irrigate for farmable food) And like sheep have bonus commerce, cow are bonus hammers, wheat is bonus hammers because it's always on a plains. Pigs get extra food as does corn. But rice got nothin :/

Foods are whacked out anyway....any food with low food output is significantly weaker than the high food equivalents. I suppose if rice had some commerce it would be at least a little more useful, but it wouldn't alleviate the "food is stronger than hammers" problem. Foods that have only 3, like plains hills sheep and plains cow are just silly and very difficult to win with if the only food in your first town relatively speaking.

hi build cottage on rice well im good for any gold. to build good stack and support all cities need lots of golds. rice only has 3 food and 0 gold , except when on a river it has 3 food and 1 gold. you should farm if on river for the +2 food = 5 food. i would rather cottage a plain grass river tile than rice.

The following are the worst food resources, from worst to not as bad:
1. Plain Hill Sheep 3F 2H - Absolute worst. Thankfully appears very rarely as only food.
2. Plain Cow 3F 3H - the 3 Hammers simply does not make up for the lack of growth.
3. Unirrigated Rice 4F 0H - The lack of hammers actually makes this the worst resource in terms of compined Food/Hammers. About as bad as a plain cow in a tight game due to the lack of production if when you go for growth. i.e.
4. Plain Deer 4F 1H - Not great. thankfully it only appears in the back where in TBG start together setting you are protected. Still not comparable to irrigated corn or pig.

Actually I allways plant city on unirrigated rice if it is possible. Same with banans. The worst is tundra deers and beavers. Rice should give more food, it is just a bug. Chinise should get double food from rice? how do you think?

I totally agree. I dont understand why rice is so nerfed compared to the other foods. Rice feeds half the world population! I happen to eat rice twice a day

I think its fine the way it is. Rice normally comes next to fresh water anyway so its not so bad. And anyway its the luck of the draw, sometimes you get good land sometimes not.
If you want everything balanced why dont you make a mod that only gives pigs, everyone gets copper and with no UU's? Oh yeah along with only green land.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes I agree that stuff like cow on plains should not be considered food since its only 3 food. More like a production tile. My idea was merely on the mathematical basis. The total combination of hammer + food + commerce seems to be 6 on all food (irrigated) that's not on river. But rice just didn't fit in the formula :/ It seemed short by 1. Give how Sheep is the animal food equivalent of +1 commerce, and the cereals have none, I think it would be logical to deduce that the designers intended it to have +1 commerce, it just never made it to production for some reason. But of course I agree that going against someone who happens to have 2 pigs on grassland and an irrigated corn while you got some random sheep and plains cow is not fair. That is something the game designers need to balance, or change the map generator. As far as bananas are concerned. They are great! However the calender tech comes too late for plantation IMO, I think it should work with Mysticism. Of course you would still need iron working for most jungle plots If you agree that Rice is lacking, we can close this discussion and start a new topic on fixing the food situation. Maybe have a different balance, instead of 1 food = 1 hammer = 1 commerce have somethign mroe drastic like 1 food is 2 hammers or 3 commerce.

I happen to eat rice twice a day Its because all developers are Westerners, same with Cow compared to Sheep. BTW I WANT A CHICKED TILE + 1F/1H , + 3F with metalcage's (require forge)

You aren't looking at the whole picture.
Other grain resources give 6 food, and +2 health(with granary). Rice gives 4 food, but still +2 health.
a +1 health bonus is more important than +1 food(well, once your cities grow), so therefore the difference in value between rice and wheat is less than you think.
The difference between rice and pigs is even less. Pigs only gives +1 health bonus until modern age.
I don't scoff at rice, unless I have a bunch of them, as I would prefer a wider variety in health resources.

Un-irrigated rice is the worst food in the game. Give me plains cows or plains hill sheep any day of the week over that piece of crap. At least they are adding some hammers to the equation to help me get out Workers and Settlers faster. Plus plains cow is hooked up in 3 turns vs. 4 for the rice.
