A friend of mine, who is a history teacher; once told her class to play Civ4 as homework if they had it. She teaches grade 12. This always stuck with me as the fundamental concept of Civilizations is the very reason it is geared towards single player.
@ Visium;
While your thoughts are well laid out and articulate I think you kinda missed your point by about a road and a half. None of that matters as the techs in single player if played appropiately as it is meant to be played by average players, do fit the time frame as you hit modern era during the appropiate years. The great wonders are all learning educated and I don't know about any other multi player players, but I personally have read the civilpedia twice. (Most of it anyways)
Its a history lesson, its a challenge and what multiplayer wants is a game quite different than the platform under which this game is meant to be for.
I still don't see many modern games if any lately (My favorite era). My problem is the turn timer increments become ridicously long as the game progress in length and I know alot of others share this pet peeve. My guess is this is why anc is so often played. (Greater enhancement of the host options might fix this easily)
If I were to help design a new Civilations keeping multiplayers in mind, I would individualize unit actions other then workers. I would give civ specific resource bonuses. The romans (Wine gives = ? ) as an example but more importantly and what I think the MP crowd is trying to vocalize for so long without much success is this one thought; (Make for us what you made for the single players)
