Well I finally got civ4 and decided to give it a try but for some reason after multiple attempts I'm unable to install game. It won't even start(not even when I try to install it manually). Well would have wanted to give final version a go after I uninstalled wow

yeah i understand what you saying tommy, but i dont think the testers had any say about the game, they were just told to play the game and report bugs. I doubt they had a say about the game itself.
Someone on the C3C forum once said something about he was asked to be a beta tester but after playing it a few times he didnt want nothing to do with it.
A few months before the game came out, they had a interveiw with one of the developers, jesse someting. He said something about before they started programming CIV he played every strtergy game, rise of nations, AoE, etc, for ideas, i just got the impression they will copy every other games and squash them all together, which i feel they have.

The testers are mostly there for two reasons that I am aware of:
1-To report game crashes/technical issues/connectivity issues/graphic card issues
2-Point out any severe imbalance found within the game concepts
Was everything found? No, questions is did everyone have the time to find all the bugs or was the game released asap?
I can tell you the programmers worked insane hours in order to make deadlines. When you are rushed it is often hard to catch everything....Attacking Firaxis is not the answer, if there are unhappy persons it shoudl be the money people who get the blame. The ones responsible for the early release of civ4.

Firaxis was acquired by Take2 AFTER the game was released (7 Nov 05), lol! Rushed early release? The "money men?" That would be FIRAXIS, lol - the release date was announced (SURPRISINGLY) in what, late august/early september 2005??? LONG BEFORE Take2 completed it's purchase. Personally, I think Take2 slowed down the train before it's inevitable wreck with SELF-IMPOSED release dates made by Firaxis. Money Man? In all cases that would be Sid and Jeff Briggs - THEY sold it AFTER C4 came out so ALL money from the game sale and the company sale went to them. (you don't really believe it was sold "at a loss," do you?) GOOD move on their part! So Avo, who rushed the game again?

Your statements are not accurate either MMV, while Take2 didn't buy Firaxis outright until after the release of Civ4 they were always the Publishers and Publishers not Developers set deadlines. The original release date was mid Nov and ended up being before the end of Oct.....susprisingly or not, the end of the fiscal year for Take2...you can draw your own conclusions. Firaxis may be to blame the problems we have, not really because of lack of effort or desire to make a top notch game, but just because of there lack of resources as a small company. I'm sure they learned some valuable lessons in it all, but now that they are a design house for Take2, I'm sure they have much less control over there destiny. Max, I wish I could figure out what your problem with installing Civ4 is....I'd sure like to kill ya again CS

CS - I'm not blaming anyone - just posted the facts.
yes - they were working together for a long time before the purchase of Firaxis (at least since January 05) but the sale didn't happen over-night. It's a long drawn-out process that was in the works for at LEAST a year before the "closing" date.
as I stated in response to Avo, NO one here attacked the sacrosanct Firaxis.
Nor did I.
If they're not being attacked, why are you defending them?
I think all you beta-testers are "blinded" by a SLIGHT possibility of eventually gaining employment.
and GOOD publishers don't "set deadlines" (as alll the beta's seem to like to blame Take2 for everything) in an unrealistic rush to get a game out.
TRUTH IN FACT - the game was rushed to coincide with the POST RELEASE time-frame of the game for purposes of the sale - why? FINANCIAL ASSETTS VICE FINANCIAL LIABILTY!
Inaccurate statement abound but in this case, not mine - it's all internet posted/documented "business" history that has nothing to do with the game itself.

Good game publishers don't set deadlines?
Your lack of understanding of these situations is astounding.
"Hey. We're going to give you lots of money to make a game, k? You just uh... y'know, make it... and uh... whenever it's ready, cool."
Publishers FREQUENTLY put up rush deadlines. There are myriad examples of this in the gaming community, by every major publisher out there. Given when CIV was released, I'd rather expect that it probably was a Take 2 move to insure high Christmas sales, after an initial series of happy players and glowing reviews. That's a very typical publisher strategy, and why so many games tend to appear around that time. Not just Take 2's... every major publisher. Good, bad, ugly, whatever - they all do it, and they always will.
Learn something about the facts before pontificating, please.

Fried - time to fess up - you're only experience with the gaming industry is with Firaxis as a paid consultant. Based on that, it's time to stop covering us with "knowledge" - You're a public school teacher with LIMITED knowledge of prgramming (other than what you have taught yourself in C3 and C4 Modding); you have zero-limited experience with computer networking and nearly everything you posted here in this forum's earlier days (probably all gone now) about "what the game will be" was wrong. I'm not diss'n you - in fact, you got lucky and got yourself in a GOOD position based on your knowledge of playing C3 - and they paid you for it - GOOD JOB! (and you've done it again for the X-Pak) Your lack of understanding of these situations is astoundingSorry Fried, but you ONLY have "the Firaxis experience" with this and telling other people that "their lack of understanding of how _______ works" is about as successful as a candle in the wind. Stop dissing everyone who YOU don't think "shares your knowledge" because there is a LOT of other knowledge out there. and stop dissing me - I didn't even bring your name into this thread (well, stop or I'll have my Mom and Dad call for one of those special Parent/Teacher conferences, lol) Honestly Fried, get a grip and try to understand that your reality differs from others - that's life. "I'd rather expect that it was probably...." - THAT'S pontification.

It s not like every game is made like fried and CS say - there are games which try to be perfected by the develpoers - they saved the money for a big name like civ and therefore got more money for programming - and the overpower of catas and cossacs for example minght have ben found out easily in testing - I remeber the early articles from FP where was stated that 1 unit stacks dont work or so - catas work amazingly good as a 1 unit def stack. and cossacs are invincable anyway
but that not the point of this thread - it s more like i think it s a shame for testers that theyx helped making a game they dont like (i see very few of em playing)

MMV opens his post with
He goes on to stirringly back this up, by proving that you don't need "facts" or "knowledge" to argue on the internet; all you need to do is type vaguely grammatical sentences into a box and click a button.
Hold on a minute...
Okay, scratch grammatical.
Well, grammatical or not, what good is "knowledge?" Pah! What MMV lacks in knowledge, he makes up in big annoying bold red italic text. Only wimp men need "knowledge" on their side, and MMV will have none of it. He will argue his case through personal strength, sputteringly typed comebacks, and loud farting sounds which he makes with his armpits whenever anyone else tries to talk.
I'm going to warn the room right now that I may have to depart this flamefest prematurely, however, so sorry MMV if I can't spend enough time insightfully debating the important issues you raise, like whether Friedrich is a public school teacher, whether public school teachers are totally lame, and whether your weenie is definitely longer than anyone else's. The reason I might have to cut this short is because I am out of microwaveable popcorn, and if I keep seeing camera-worthy remarks like "You're a public school teacher with LIMITED knowledge of prgramming (other than what you have taught yourself in C3 and C4 Modding); you have zero-limited experience with computer networking" from a man with juicy quotes like
then I will be needing more popcorn heated up (extra buttery) really soon. I fully expect that sort of entertainment to continue, too, because when you're
...like MMV, well, it's hard to ever admit you're wrong!
In this sentence MMV knows so totally much about computers that he can spot malware everywhere. Why, lurking in cables all across the Atlantic, there are programs waiting to attack anyone who might try to do whatever those computers do when you use that internet thing, and connections, and, uh, routers! Whatever they do, they'll get you, because you're using a computer, and computers are mysterious and dangerous! Anything can happen!
MMV knows computers and networking just right about as well as General Ripper knew warfare.
I know I already mentioned it, but I have to wonder in more length exactly what the deal is with all the weird flames about Fried being a teacher, of all things. This baffles me. I kinda like teachers. Did a teacher bite MMV when he was young to warrant these insults?
Then again:
...is so opaquely inane that it barely counts as an insult, so I guess he gets off on that count. If flaming someone is tennis, that is like ping-pong with a kiddie-sized table.
That said, personal congratulations to my man MMV, on having the enormous graciousness to "not bring Fried's [real] name into the thread." That's really generous of you. I guess you must be a real paragon of virtue if you can withstand that mighty temptation.

And that, Elledge, was why I edited my post and withdrew from the field. It's tough to make a salient point with someone who is all sound and fury, signifying nothing.

MMV were you there? No.
We were. If we tell you the dates were pushed up because the money boys in distribution wanted it so then it is so. You seriously think programmers would wish to have their products out before they feel it is ready? You ain't gonna find all the answers in life by "googling". We said take2 stepped up the release dates...then it is so. Then again maybe we are wrong because we cannot read our own beta testing forums. Maybe all testers were illiterate and misunderstood who imposed the time restrictions.

Interesting thread. Not sure how it's gone from a complaint about installing a game to attacks on administrators and other ladder members but whatever.
-----------
Maxfin.
Not sure if you still have the game but if you would like some help I would be happy to try.
To start lets learn more about your specific system:
What system do you have ?
Provide OS, Processor size, RAM ? What graphics card and graphics memory size ? That would be a start.
Assuming its all up to par, I would suggest, if you haven't already done so ... try uninstalling all CIV games. Be sure to delete the folders after and the deletion of the registry entries left over. There are several. A good registry cleaner will help with that.
I can help you in more detail by email if you would like. I've found that the majority of pc problems can be remedied with some careful editing of the registry and clean up of old files including the temp files. It might also be a good idea to bring your Directx version up to the right level prior to installing.
If you are playing CIV3 still then you need to install that first and then CIV4. Anways Maxfin email me if you would like some help and I'll be happy to try.

I said that several time and ll do it again - I and I think the 99,5% rest of ladder players appreciate and respect the work the admins do - but in some fileds they (you) are just not succesful - the worst thing is that connection problems got bigger (different) since patch, another imo bad thing is that u (or some)help making expension pack - thats like the guy going to macdonalds everyday and wondering why he s sick (maybe bad example). Ladder needs no expension pack but a civ as it is written on package - imo
oh well and whoever read MMV s post - I do better by not reading
