Huh? If you have too much food, and not enough hammers, then slave when you get a chance.

Before patch u got 30 shields per slave and u could slave once unit was done up to 19 shields (u had to produce archer for 1 turn to slave it next - kinda same with axeman if u had 6 shields in cap). Rest of the shields u got was flowover to enxt unit. (like 11 shields)
After patch the flowover seem to be less (more like 5 hammers instead 11) - I cant really say how much it is - but u can still slave a archer after u had produced it the prewious turn with only 1 shield.
and in fact espacially in early game slaving is kinda a must - to get 1. worker maybe and after if u have worked your food resource u can pretty much grow every turn or every 2nd (u grow faster in small sizes) - in small sizes u also dont have the unhappyness problems.
After I worked all my land i use less slave - only in these mainly food ciites - in eras up to ren u can produce kinda fast (unit every 2 turns) without slave aswell

Slaving is now more important than ever since the new patch it's the only way to get quick hammers(sheilds) out. A favourite strategy of mine is slaving at the start when a warrior only has 1 hammer left to finish, this will cause the 20 hammers i got from slaving to carry over to the next unit i build (typically a worker or settler). I can then slave again after waiting 1 turn for those carry over hammers to kick in to finish the worker off. This can get you a very quick worker out despite only being able to slave 1 citizen at a time when on 2 or 3 pop. Slaving on 2 or 3 pop is also a good idea as you grow quicker on those lower population levels and you dont really have to care about unhappiness when your pop is that low.
Lastly slaving is great if you are at war as you can get 5 units out in 5 turns in your frontline cities, which is useful if you see a slow moving catapult stack approaching your borders.

I find that the two biggest places I slave are coastal cities with few good production tiles (but maybe a fish or two) and cottage-commerce cities.
If a city is growing faster than I can keep it happy, I usually also slave happiness buildings / units instead of working less food tiles.
