I just got done playing a CTON where I won by one point. I was extremely suprised here. What I did was convert anything I could to farms and put all cities on Max Growth. I had all my cities building wealth the last 10 turns to get enough money to raise science. I think wealth is better than building research, you can then raise science in all cities except just one. At about the 20 turn left point I had made sure my cities all had granaries to grow quicker and my coastal cities had lighthouses too. This worked good. It's a great way to get last minute points.

I think one of the best cton strategies when playing with people that are good is to actually hold back on points with things that can potentially produce many points very quickly. Why? If you have a lower score, many times people will not be gunning for you, especially if you have a high power as well (unless people just gun for you every game - the downside of winning lots of ctons when left unchecked ). One way of doing this is population. Incidentally, you can stifle your growth by producing towns instead of irrigation early, then switching over to all farms by turn 10-15 for a pop boost (except in a capital which is probably going to earn you a few techs by keeping to towns for the last turns). Another method is hoarding great people, and using them all for techs on the last turn. I have saved up as many as 7 great people in games before, and used them all on the last turn for 200+ points. Its vastly effective and unexpected! Certainly the best way for the final push of points, though, is the aforementioned artist bomb on turn 21. If you drop 1 or 2 of these you are really going to secure quite a few points. On a side note, with the same idea in mind of remaining "under the radar" pointwise, its probably a bad idea to get a wonder like the sistine chapel, which will probably put you in first place, but you will not be nearly as strong power wise as your points dictate and players will gun for you. I also dislike creative trait and religions somewhat for this reason as well. Religions serve almost no purpose IMO in ctons, since I almost always go hereditary rule and have no trouble with unhappiness, and you will appear to be the guy to shoot for with a huge score and no power.
