When you have a question that doesn't require a long, extensive answer, but you want to hear lots of people's opinions, post it here!
Please note that other threads that aren't strategy discussions that are started in this forum may be merged into this thread.

Ok.
I bought the game, Played online last night and was the Mighty aztecs.
My production SUcked. I built a forge and it helped. Still wasnt nice. Finally built up 10 Jags(about turn 70) and they all lost to a couple of axeman without achieving a golden age.
Any idea how to Increase prodution? I built a couple hamlets, and my workers even built a couple of workshops.
I have to admit, I am a noob, But was bored out of my skull.
It felt like I was a noob in a future game all over again.
When I bought the game, the Stratagy book was not in, so I couldn't buy it.
Please, some advise, before I sell my $50 game for $2.

OK first you will never get a GA by achieving a victory with your UU. Read my comment under GA thread . Not sure what kind of terrain you had, usually hills will provide you with a good production when mined, my way to go there is basically to have cities with good production (hills around) and others that do gold or something else (cottages). You will have to notice though that Civ4 is not any more about killerstacks at least not like it was. What matters much more are the different units and promotions - use them. Uni

Battles don't get you GL's Heroray. And your Jags in CIV are just weak swordmen that don't need iron and have a jungle bonus. Axemen have a 50% bonus against all melee units, if I see lots of them, I'd use Horse Archers to attack instead.
As to the production issues, mines help, and if you have lots of forests chop a few in the early game to get a boost, for your barracks or units or settlers or workers. I usually start on a worker no later than size three, some people(I do this sometimes) start a worker right away, it stops your city at size one for a bit but long term it can be a good thing to have a worker before anyone else. I could be you were just in a low production terrain which happens.
CIV is slightly slower at the start than C3C, but it moves alot faster after that, I imagine that the average ladder game will now be alteast 120 turns, not the average of 90 turns as with C3C.
Keep learning Heroray, this is a new game not C3C revisited, read the manual and take some time to read the 'pedia, lots on game concepts and units tech's etc there.

Heroray, I expect (I don't have the game yet) that it will help tremendously if you build a worker and start improving your terrain as soon as possible.

Here are some quicky tips from me-
1. Do not build worker first. Wait until you are size 2 or even 3 before doing so.
2. Pay attention to your city screen. You can change which tiles you want to use to build what you are building in that city. For instance, if you are building a warrior, you can click the tile that has the most shields to build it faster. A size 2 city can use 2 tiles at same time, and so on.

Do you just get points from: Land - Pop - Techs and wonders? Or is there some secret to gaining even more points?

CIV was designed with none of the "secrets" of previous versions in mind - the exact score breakdown sits right there on your screen; Land, Pop, Tech, Wonders.

What Fried said but to be a bit more specific if you hover your mouse over your score it gives you a breakdown of it.

Quick question:
How do I stop my cities from burning? In the last version of the game, you could click the center-tile of the city and it would auto-manage it so it stopped burning...now do I have to make a building or something?

The thing i cant figure out is the melee units +50% against melee unit. So if a melee fought with another melee both +50%, wouldnt it just cancel each other out or do u get the bonus when attacking or vice versa when defending. And im not talking about promotions. A few units are trained with a +X% against same unit type as itself. One unit type being strong against a different type of unit makes sense. This seems like a waste. I have not tried mp yet but i am enjoying my computer match. not sure how the multi will be like. What have u guys been playing teams or cton? Speaking of mp. My computer just made the minimum requirements and it only 2 years old and was a decent quality at the time. Will i be one of the laggers now? What upgrades should i downlaod to help? Dont want to dish out more money while this ones still under extended warrentee.

The bonus for melee units against other melee units.
Since there is now only one value for each unit, instead of the att/def of old. It counts on both attack and def. If both units had the same bonus, then it would pretty much cancel each other as both would then have the same strength value, minus other bonus from terrain. Now you say, what is the point of the bonus then? Use the pumped up melee unit against other melee units without the bonus.
As to cheap upgrades to your system. A free and most times painless way to upgrades is to go and download the most up to date drivers for components. (Video card, sound card,...) Most times the new drivers are more efficient then the older ones. Another cheap upgrade would be your memory. You would have to check if your warranty will allow you to install more yourself or take it in and have it done. But if it allows you to do it yourself, it is quite easy to do most times. The next upgrade from there would be your video card, that you would most likely have to take it in and have done to not cancel your warranty. This also usually be the most expensive one.

If you have "Mr Yucks" in your city, go into the city screen and mouse over them. That will tell you what the problem is. Solutions include, building city improvements that make them happy, such as religous buildings if you have a religion or theatres or othe buildings. Or you can switch to a civic that lets military units "beat the peasants" to make them happy. If your city is just suffering from bad health then use aquaducts and later other improvemnts like hospitals etc to increase the health. CS

When I have the appropriate civic, why can't I find the "Hurry Production" button or command? Where the heck is it? I want to pop rush stuff in the early game and I'd like to gold rush stuff in the late game. Please help.

I want to pop rush stuff in the early game and I'd like to gold rush stuff in the late game. Please help. in your city screen if you look at the bottom right corner of the screen. Where it gives you the option to have the Governor control your cits. ie food, production, commerce etc. just above that you will see two buttons that have an up arrow. The one on the left will rush units/buildings by reducing your population. The one on the right will rush using gold. Be very careful rushing units in the early game as the rush will cost most of the time 2 population points. This is HUGE disadvatage in the long run. Though if you find that your cities grow huge easily this may benefit you in the long run. its a catch 22. But i'd advise not to rush unts for pop.

For instance slavery allows you to pop rush things. I belive it is unlocked with iron working (or bronze working?)

Here's a question I haven't been able to figure out the answer to:
When playing SP, I see the message come up that "So-and-so is the first to circumnavigate the globe". What does one get for this feat? I'm guessing maybe a Great Person but I'm not sure.
Anyone know?
