For anyone who is interested and didn't already know, I found a decent way of emulating MP in SP. By hosting a direct IP game, you can make the desired players you want AI, and still have all the MP settings ( turn limit, elim, etc..). I discovered this when I was sick of playing the lobby reindeer games, and needed to practice for the CCC. Hope this is helpful.

with all the new strategies, civ traits, new resources, and many many different kinds of "improvements" with civ4, I think anyone that goes into the game with a pre-conceived notion of what to build will be playing with a disadvantage. this game (and EVERY game WITHIN civ4) is unique and very "situational" for the first few turns. (even if you choose your civ) I also totaly agree

Anyone got any tips regarding what to build first? First look @ your land, if you see fish, research fishing for work boats. If you see cows or horses , build animal husbandry, etc..................... If your a spiritual civ or just really want a religion, build meditation or polytheism (i think thats the other one). If you ask me, my strategy differs every game due to my land at start and which civ i pick (or am dealt). As for units and buildings I usually wait until about size 3 to get out a worker or a setler, and once again.......it all depends on land imo.

Some completely different thing: Vermillion mentioned that by hosting a game in direct ip, u can play with AI like a cton game. Maybe i have a different version (1.09), but they still gang bang on me. The AI doesnt declare war on AI altough always war is on. I was testing that primarily for team games. Just to get the right settings for the CCC. I haven't tried it in a cton set up, although I believe Zhenon stated in another thread that it is very helpful in practicing your defense I have done it in the custom set up, and yes you do get thoroughly gang banged . In my method war weariness isn't a factor since it is considered a MP game. (I think)

I like ghandi probably the best, but for some reason Ive had alot of luck with Louis (believe it or not) who doesn't really get a relig. or a UU in an anc. start, but does very well none the less. In an anc. game Rome w/ iron is vicious , but one heck of a gamble (IMO). If they have iron, they are almost guaranteed a kill (depending on skill level of player of course). All in all, they are all powerful in their own right depending on land , player skill and resources of course.
