Well I'm not sure about that specific error, but you need more memory, and that Hercules card is an old Radeon 8500 card, so it's not going to run Civ4 very well, as it's an old DX8 card, that combined with your low memory and your not real powerful CPU is a problem.

It is above minimum specs.
Edit: I see now that there is conflicting info on this. The manual says that 256 MB is sufficient, while the readme.htm states that on Windows XP I need 512 MB.

It appears that no My Games folder has been created.

The Sid Meiers Civilization folder in My Games doesn't get created until the first time you successfully run the game, you have to get to the main menu to have done this.

Good news: the game runs on my newly created extra system user. It still won't run on my primary user though, not even after copying the My Games folder. So for now I am restricted to single-player. The error, apparently, is that somehow the My Documents folder of my primary user cannot be found. That should be easy to patch, right ...?

I'll ask about your problem, CIV is supposed to be compliant with the "windows for gaming" standard, so it shouldn't have a problem with your normal limited account.

Hi all, I just upgraded my sys to play Civ 4 better, now it wont even start. Here are my specs: Asus P5P800 motherboard, Pentium4 2.66 cpu, Nvidia GeForce 5500 with 256 megs, I gig of 333 mhz ram, 80 meg Maxtor hd with 8 meg cache. The game loads just fine. Put disc 1 in to play, the game starts loadin till you see xml loadin, then it just disappears and nothin happens. Thats it, no error message or anything. Reloaded at least 1 dozen times and gettin really frustrated as the whole point of spendin all this money was to play Civ 4. Reloaded Conquest and it works just fine. Help!

Also you can try loging in as a different user on your windows XP system. If you don't have a second account you can create you. Several people have reported that this works over on 'poly.

I had a similar issue with the Nvidia GeForce 5500 when I got it yesterday.
When I put in the CD-ROM to load the drivers for it, I not only downloaded the drivers and the DirectX on the CD, I also download the "extras" that were there.
I went back into the comp and "removed the extras" as well as the drivers and DirectX and started from scratch with just the driver down-load and DirectX from the CD (actually, just the drivers, comp said both times that I already had the DirectX) - it worked fine after that.
I'm REALLY impressed with that graphics card Will - hope you get it worked out.
FYI - I hope you had your anti-virus software OFF when downloading the drivers from the CD - there are reported issues if you have it on.

Hmmm, guess that means we will see things the same way MMV? ;D I didnt have anti-virus off at first and that was part of the prob. Dloaded then deleted the drivers on nvidia cd, ended up dloading from their website instead. Works much better now. C y all there!

Always download drivers from the net for anything. You don't know how long that box was sitting on the shelf.

True whip, but in this case, because the card is brand new, the install-cd already had the new drivers.

Regarding the second user thing, I have found that once you have created this second user it is also possible to run teh game from the primary user by means of the 'run as' property (right-click on the icon or the .exe). That is, provided the second user has a password. If it doesn't, it won't work.
Next I gave my primary user a password, but that did not help, I still can't run the game normally but I have to use 'run as'.
