Clans are groups formed by some of our members, who have chosen to "team up" - to band together for both game playing and social purposes. It is something like a fraternity/sorority in college. No one has to join. It is purely voluntary.
Each clan manages itself - including having its own recruiting/admission policies. Some have web sites where these are explained. You can also read more about CLANs elsewhere in this forum.
By studying clan rosters you might see a few familiar names of people you've played and connect with. Talk to them and to people in the lobby.
Every once in awhile someone will form a new clan too. Many clans have come and gone. Only a few have stood the test of time.
While some people have been with the same clan for years, others have switched 4 or more times in that same period.
As Ladder Admins we don't have any rules about how clans run themselves or handle admissions. They are autonomous. We never penalize a clan per se. Clans don't break rules, people do.
Every 6 weeks or so, there is the Clan Championship Cup. A competition where the best play the best over a long weekend 24-hour format. It's exciting - top level competition, and fun.
In between CCC's, clan have their own practice sessions, meetings, communications, and fun.
While not obligatory, clans might be a way for you to enhance your fun here at CIV4Players.

How many members can a clan have?
Does one memeber of the clan represent the whole clan in the CCC or do all the clan members directly participate?
If one member represents, do the non-participating members have to report a loss as well?
And can we select a different member for each event based on who is good at what kind of game style the best?

Am surprised Canuck did not reply to this - let me give it a crack and he or someone else can correct me if I am wrong ;-): 1) There is no restriction on how many members a clan can have but CCC events are typically restricted to a max of 20 registered players per clan. 2) As far as I can tell no one player represents a clan - some members of a clan are more extrovert than others - like me for example I tend to blether all the time - my clan leader is seldom to be seen but if it came to one Representative he would be our guy :-). Players sign up for events in the CCC usually at the direction of one or two clan members assigned the duty of CCC clan rosters for events. 3) Not sure if your question regarding reporting a loss is CCC related - I'll answer as though it is. Most events are run as a tourney and the reporting happens as a result of one clan player reporting a loss in the tourney which generates reporting automatically on the case ladder as well. Some events require manual reporting on the case ladder such as CTON or IronMan. 4) it is up to the discretion of the clan what clan players are assigned to what events - the only restriction is the number of times a clan member is allowed to participate in CCC events I think it is usually no more than 5 events if I am not mistaken.
