That is an interesting subject as the "byzantines" never called themselves that....they called themselves Romans Only the centuries later, Catholic influenced historians came up with a way not to recognize that the Eastern Roman Empire were Romans, by inventing the term Byzantines CS Not entirely true actualy......Check this link Canuck en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_EmpireWikipedia is not the most reliable source but in this case it manages to give a very good summary.
