Not sure many of you are really indterested in it but I hope some might help Took this list (http://civilization4.net/3/177/) and bought Radeon 9550 to my "infamous" GIGABYTE GA-8IG1000PRO-G Socket 478 Intel 865G ATX and P4 2.4/800 Mgz, 1024 mb ... Problem - "failed to initialize render" exactely as described ... Did everything support team recommends in www.2kgames.com/civ4/support_ati.htm, including deleting drivers and civ, installing first direct x TWICE, then civ then running, then drivers, exactely as they say.. does not work, same error. Did what they asked in second half. Good no this error, but civ does not run. It loades, changes resolution, continues to load, and then just CTD without any explanations (resolution changed back to 1280x1024)... What shall I do? Write fraxis to demand money back? Change card?? :help:

Victor,
I have the same video card and my system isnt as nice as yours, but there are a couple things you can check: Update your drivers: Once I updated my drivers, the game worked better but I still ctd every now and then. you can goto cnet.com and get them. moniters drivers: some monitirs have drivers as well . you might want to check that too.
Don't have regular GS open when playing. thats when i run into my biggest problems.
My game has been playable thru direct ip ands sp mostly so You arent the only one with this problem, I wouldnt be surprised if theres a patch to address this coming out sometime soon. Be patient my friend.

Be patient? The guy does everything that is suggested by the game developer and spends money to upgrade his system and it still doesn't work.
In what other industry would such a customer satisfaction strategy as this work? Buy a new car and the damn thing won't even start in the driveway and you're told "be patient"? Go to a restaurant and have your meal served cold and be told "be patient"? Invest in a stock fund that won't let you recover your equity and be told "be patient"?
I think that in many cases the patience will run out and players will give up. But do the promoters care? They got their $50.
I don't understand why the software industry is expected to be given a pass when they produce crap and the customers are told to "be patient".

Did you successfully use the unpak utility as well on the art.pak file? CS Yes, I did. It took a while thought. After moved that file 1 level up as was asked... After that their famous error does not appear, but game crashes before even movie starts. On the same place always .. right after start .. PS Strange country.. I wonder why. return my card for money and even cgange tham every 2 weeks if I am patient, even if it perfectely works, but I can not get my money back on non working software if I opened it.. I wonder why...

The only thing I can think off is for you to go into your ini and set nomovies=1 so that the movies don't play.
