Iwe seen this term used a few times in strat treads but what does it mean ? And how do you use it Gogf wrote : - Just like in ancient, sentry nets are VERY important. Usually people will make a very poor sentry net with just their starting units, and a single camel archer or knight with the sentry promotion can easily maneuver its way around this into an undefended city! in this : civ4players.proboards44.com/index.cgi?board=gstad&action=display&thread=1147299162

A sentry is a unit that is watching tiles. You would probably sit it on a forest hill, so it can't be killed and it sees a good distance. If you are clever you can set a net that prevents anything getting through unnoticed. Therefore it 'catches' the enemy out, hence "net".

with the exception, of course, that "sentry" doesn't work in C4 and WL like it did in the previous Civ games.
while in "sentry mode" the unit would "pop-up" and cycle allowing you to see what has moved into it's view - or remain stationary if nothing has come into it's field of view.
now, it's more of a "sleep-mode" just sitting there until you hear the dreadful sound of death - they should be shot for sleeping at their post while on duty
firaxis contractors say this was intended and it works fine even though the book and civlopedia say different - they should also be shot for sleeping at their post while on duty
there IS a "manual" way around the "properly working sentry-mode" - every turn when your units cycle instead of hitting the sentry "button of death," just click "skip-turn" each turn thus allowing your sentry to actually do sentry duty instead of dying.
it takes a few more seconds every turn but by hitting the "skip turn" button, you've got a better shot at using units AS a sentry net around your civ instead of being set-up to being blindly killed.
**modified to add** that indeed sentry mode DOES work, but only WITHIN your civ borders (where you can SEE anything there anyway)

thanks MMV
But when you get lots of worker and stuff I find it faster to scout my boarders by watching the map and minimap, especialy cos i have units before citypops, so i try to keep my "open" units on a min. basic, guess it comes down to playstyle.

Sentry nets are meant for you to see incomming troops without suddenly getting surprised. A double move with horses could slip by the boarders easily if the boarders weren't expanded enough. This is one of those must do things in late game, there is nothing more dumb than dying to a small stack of horses when you could have sent the army there in time.

Horses can just as easily slip past a sentry unit with double move, though. You're not watching your frontier the entire turn, so while your sentry is snoozing, a stack of horses just waltzed past while you weren't looking.

What if you're not watching the mini map? Or is there some indicator that says on it? Can't say I use the mini map.

Well I can't say I'm an "experienced gamer". Obviously I've still got some stuff to learn.
