There's a strategy section in these forums here that help a lot. The typical game type you should play if you're new is ctons so check the cton guide there. ctons are free for alls with always war, no trading or alliances and random civs where you won't let anyone down if you lose.
In general ladder play is heavily military oriented, typically you will only build a granary, barracks and possibly a monument in each city. The rest of the time should be spent building military units, workers and settlers with an occaisional wonder if it is really worthwhile.

u should play a 150t ladder game kinda same way as u d play a nonturnlimit game vs ai on deity in sp edit: with allways war on I think he wants strategical tips not settings for a game besides you forgot to tell him to put 2 city elimination on The most important thing in any ladder game is Dont Die and the best way towards achieving this isto kill youre nearest neighbours ASAP. You need to expand fast (8 Cities in a cton) aswell as grow fast as of yet I havent got the tech fast bit too a t. But the best way to learn ladder games is to play a few ctons and read the links Kazache suggested If i Happen to be in the lobby and not in Helper tag mode pm me for some training game anytime you see me around Baz ill be glad to Help. 8 cities in a typical cton?
What nonsense.
5 good cities as a general rule of thumb on ancient 120 turn cton which can be extended up to 6 and at most 7 if conditions are particularly good.
With that you'll easily be competitive with most players unless the map is standard with only 6 or so players.
Bantams, have you EVER had that many cities in a cton without someone squashing you...or even that many cities in a cton period?

I try get 15 cities, but then it die by doing so in every 5th-10th cton i play, being stuck with 5-7 cities is plain boring. Also i rather die and loose as to possibly not win.
Most important in ladder games is to hold up a fun sportive athmosphere imo, we r there to have fun in a competetive game. never forget that when being in a reload or having to wait for some1 to rejoin for kinda long.
The gameplay itself is just civ and u get used to it fast imo and every1 should establish his own style. Dont try to enter topplayer teamers in start or u and every1 in game ll get pissed, it s neither fun dying nor see teammate dying fast. I wrote some stuff about buildup what should be general knowledge in strategy section. Apart that basic knowledge how to play civ u should listen to teammates when joining teamers.

I have a completely different strategy than everyone else in ctons that has served me well, especially if the cton is on a defensive map. I get currency about mid way through (a really underated tech). Once i have currency i set the inner cities to build wealth and i city spam like a madman. 25+ cities is a reasonable amount if you've managed to kill or cripple both your neighbours early. I have all those cities slaved down to <5 pop and make a point of having the most power. I then let the cities grow in the last 25 turns - by having 25+ cities go from ~3 pop to ~10 in the last 25 turns the score graph is pretty much vertical and will go from <1000 to >2500. No one ever expects such a sleeper

You can discount most of the nonsense you just read here. 5 cities is for a clueless p()ssy and 25 is for a fanciful lunatic with two 5 city clueless p()ssies neighboring both side or complete noobs that died to a few warriors. You build as many cities as possible depending on the map, the setting and the circumstances. Anyone who tells you an ideal number of cities to build is more than likely a poor player.
There is no holy grail of how to play a cton but to log many hours in the game and pay close attention to your environment. Reading the strategy section will be a great help as well, even though for every nugget of gold discovered, you will need to read at least 20 duds from people who only think they have the key. Still a must for a player new to MP. After reading that and playing often you will start to develop a style of play incorporating many tricks, tactics and strategies that works for you.
Another thing and probably the most important thing. Never start to think you know it all after a few wins in a row or something. You should always be contemplating a way you could have done it quicker, better or craftier.

This is kinda piontless IMO, everyone plays diffrently! Lets not try and make everyone play the same, i love it when i se diffrent tactics working agiasnt me.
I have my own cton style, which has served me pretty well in the past, and i know others play diffrently, if this game has any stratagy element there should be no right and wrong answer.
Infact once in a inland cton got attacked by galleons, my response was "nicely done"!

Totally agree with Tony and Necrom. But nota's currency strat is interesting. I certainly build gold as a strategy - not quite in this way though . Number of cities depends on land, space, neighbours, situation etc etc. Though if you really wanna know, I would say I average 8.

The key to playing in ladder games is sticking to the basics. In general buildings take a long time to really pay off, so you will want to build things that build your civ up quickly, like making more cities and lots of workers to work each one as you build them, and always having good military. In cton it's often much better to be a big threat to someone else rather than sit back to watch yourself get attacked from many places unpredictably.
I play like tommynt in that I always play to win. My mind set is to win at all costs, even if it means I might die. If you want to climb the ladder you might not want to do this, as you will find yourself dead for a while, but it will definitely make you a better player. I also use a similar strategy to notagoodname, going for currency fairly quickly for the extra trade route in each city and the use of wealth which is very powerful now in warlords with 100% conversion of hammers to $$. The other way to go is to use alphabet for research, if I have marble, since I will be going for the great library. I would say if I have less than 10 cities in a 120 turn cton, I am having a bad game.

Well since he asked about 150 turns you are talking bollocks And there was me, in the real world where people don't play ctons beyond 130 turns in the main and 140 is exceptional. Even still 8 cities is a nonsense number you pulled from your ass. I have screenies of pretty much all my games and a decent number of ctons, people aren't going beyond 6 in all but exceptional circumstances. For a new player, the advice should be 5-6 cities and these be good and defensible.

In the ctons I used to play I always had more than 6 cities... Delusions of grandeur or maps of emptiness, one or the other.

I would say if I have less than 10 cities in a 120 turn cton, I am having a bad game. Well I did kinda try this yesterday. I killed 3 neighbours so had an enormous amount of space to expand into (the map was too big). I got 15 cities up and could have had several more. By building gold I still teched good. I didn't build more cities or concentrate on point making cos I'd assume I'd pass dreddcool's score by going pop and win (also the blazing timer made it tuff). Turns out he had 17 cities! bleh. I think it's the 1st time 1870 wasn't enough for me to win.
