After the game is released, Firaxis is likely to be quite interested in feedback from the community. Since I'm quite sure Apolyton and CivFanatics will see a goodly bit of feedback in the single player realm, we've no need for that here. What we CAN do, however, is supply them with a very large amount of Multiplayer-Specific feedback, better than any other community around. So: 1. This thread will remain locked until release, and please be respectful of that. 2. After release, please post MP-specific commentary here. If you want to talk about this or that civ being too powerful, please at least do so in the MP context. 3. If you don't like something, be specific as to why and don't do it in an insulting manner. Just like your Civ4 Admins, Firaxis is a lot more likely to listen to politely (or at least not rudely) phrased remarks and commentary. They're people too. Unlocking in ...28 days, 15 hours, 45 minutes!

If you are getting failures with your ATI cards with CIV please follow these steps, this comes from Firaxis: People who are receiving a failure to initialize error on startup that own ATI cards should do the following. This has worked on every test case where this problem was experienced. 1. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the listing titled ‘ATI Graphics Driver’ 2. Once uninstalled they need to download the latest version of the Windows Catalyst Driver – 5.10 Windows XP & Windows 2000: support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27 3. REBOOT 4. Retry launching the game CS

Just curious but why do I have to use the Disk 1/Install Disk to play the game not the Disk2/Play disk?

mislabeled in the manufacturing process.
(despite the current trend, it's not Sid's fault)

Finally got online didn't play though so I can't comment on that. My very first impression was of disappointment though. When I opened the box ( while still in the car ) and looked at the research chart I stared in disbelievement. It was in French!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Luckily the manual is in English. :-)

theres something wrong with the hotjoining thing...
unless you originally passworded your civ, anyone can enter and just play on. Is there anyway for the host to kick the intruders or to decide that a civ that dropped is dead forever ? got a game today where every minute a player was connecting, then dropped, then another took his seat for one minute, then another etc etc

All serious players should password protect their civ, period.
Otherwise yes anyone can take over for you.
People haven't yet figured out that in the lobby they list games in progress (identified by telephone like icon) as well as those in setup. The ones without the phone are in set up.
Things have changed. It's really not that big an adjustment. I predict in a few days we'll have these issues ironed out.
A lot of people are playing without even reading the manual. Of course there will be screwups then.
I just was killed in a good game where we had no lag, no OOS, no restarts. Quite a pleasure actually.
Best, SPM

ok... now imagine you're both a "serious" player and have "read the manual" and still you would like to have some control on the hotjoiners, is that possible ?
simple case : a player drops without having given his pw to the people he was playing with or to his potential sub (I believe since there's no GS arcade civ4 lobby yet, people inside the game cant communicate with the said potential sub) Would be cool if the host could pick the hotjoiner he wants from a list of people trying to hotjoin, or if he could kick a player who hotjoined but wasnt the one he wanted (in the case of non-passworded civs)
Atm imo hotjoining feature concept isnt implemented perfectly, and it has nothing to do with stupid users "not reading the manual" and "screwing up games"

Oh my gosh, I was willing to accept some of the problems currently with MP play, but today takes the cake, and the reason I've come to this site. After getting to about 1 AD, one guy out of the 6 playing says "Sorry work called, gotta go"....And since he was hosting, the entire game died. Poof. What a waste of an hour or two. Other games I've played, people are such crybabies--they quit after having even a minor setback.
Or they are too young and keep saying "my dad is yelling at me, i have to go to bed"...
IM TIRED OF IT.
I plan on registering on here and organizing some games with people who can ACTUALLY PLAY.
Okay, Im done venting. Redly

Redly, consider joining Civ4players ladder. It's a league with a ranking system. Players don't quit as they have incentive to keep their rank and stats up. Besides that, it's a group of serious players most of whom have a muture attitude to the game and the competition.

OK here goes,
So far I haven't been able to enjoy the MP experience.
Every time i get into the lobby the following combination of things happen:
I can chat for a few minutes then my entire screen freezes up for 30 secs or so. After this happens 3 or 4 time i get booted back to the sign in screen screen.
Sometimes after a freeze up the game list goes blank and you can't see the games.
I tried joining a game but it never connected.
Sometimes the entire game crashes.
My computer is not at question because single play is fine.
I do run norton AV but i turned it off while trying to play.
I am connected via a router and cable modem but I saw no configuration information either online or in the manual.
can someone please tell me what the heck is going on here so i can play MP.
this is starting to be a drag.
oh yeah one thing neeeds to be done to lock the game list so you can actually scroll down it instead of being kicked back to the begining of it every time someone creates a game.
this game is very very buggy for me in MP
thanks,
Allan

somtimes while am in the CIV lobby looking for a game, civ totally closes down and i end up on my desktop and have to load civ back up again. this is highly annoying
the list of games i cant use my scroller to scroll through them to see the games further down. it just automatically drags me to the top of the list, i suffered this for 2 days before i asked in the lobby and somone told me to use the arrow keys
during ingame i often have a big line of writing going through the centre of my screen saying out of sync sync seed =(numbers) and some other stuff appear. this is also very very annoying

The lobby instability will be fixed soon, in a patch. Same with the game list, in the mean time running in windowed mode seems to help the crashes, and click on the game list and use the arrow keys to move up and down.

Yea, scrolling in the lobby is annoying. Also with so many games there should really be some better navigation of them. Like a way to filter out the games. If i'm just looking for a certain setting I should be able to put that into a filter.
Or at the very least filter out games that are full or locked. That would make things much simpler and easier.

Does that mean before 1/2 the players give up and never come back? Sorry to be so cynical; but that lobby is absolute junk. I don't think it would have taken much QA to discover that. I'm not blaming the MP Ladder Playtesters as they are basically hard working, well meaning, volunteer amateurs. I'm sure their efforts made this a much better game. But really, the paid professionals should not have let this thing be released with a lobby that has players pulling their hair out. I'll be back after the second or third patch.

Soon=likely next week. And if people quit just because we couldn't have predicted the vast amount of games going to be played(mostly because of pirated games) well Civers as a whole are very cynical indeed.

And other than 2 bugs in the lobby, what else makes it junk? Just wondering as we are trying to improve the lobby and there is a lobby suggestion thread that the Dev's are watching, btw.

I think the simplest way to frame the suggestions is just to ask that the lobby have all of the features that the GameSpy Arcade lobby used for c3c has.
That, plus please get rid of the rotating planet background. At best it is distracting; at worst it causes vertigo.
