[glow=red,2,300]Look at the second page for new game info.[/glow]
I started a multiplayer PitBoss game in the section by that name that started as FFA and as it formed, it kinda turned into an official epic game. So, I'm also posting the game here, as per the rules section 26, subsection 7. I have not set a start date as many people don't have Warlords yet. This game is still forming, with three players (including myself), who have confirmed that they have Warlords and are ready to play, and several others who have expressed interest. In fairness to players who have been waiting patiently to play this game, we will fill slots by first come (with Warlords), first served. That said, new players who didn't post on the other thread are welcome to join, in order to get this game off the ground.
After careful consideration, let's go over the game rules and settings we have agreed upon so far so there's absolutely no misunderstanding as per section 26-14. Please read the entire list carefully before you object. Some of these settings are still up for negotiation, so feel free to comment on them.
There will be no teams and no AIs
Settings Map: Continents Size: appropriate in proportion to the number of players. Section 26-3 of the rules suggests 4 on small, 5 on standard, 7 on large, and 10 or more on huge, in order to give everyone enough room to expand but its negotiable. Climate: Temperate Sea Level: Medium Starting Era: Ancient (not negotiable) Speed: Quick World Wrap: Cylindrical, like Earth is. Resources: Standard (unless anyone can tell me why balanced is better)
Options No Barbarians: off (by majority vote) Technology Trading is allowed (see section 26, subsection 11) Permanent Alliances: off (as much fun as it might be, it just doesn't make sense in a ladder game unless teams are equal. No one wants to share their victory anyhow.) Always War: off (see section 26-11) Always Peace: off (see section 26-11) Permanent War or Peace: off (see section 26-11) Require complete kills: on (host's choice)
All game victories are enabled, as well as additional scoring opportunities during the game at ten benchmark years (see sections 26-8, 26-9, 26-12, and 26-13). I've also heard people use five benchmark years but everyone has to agree on that.
Multiplayer Options Simultaneous turns: on Take over AI: off (we will finish with the original players, hopefully) Shuffle Teams: off (N/A) Anonymous: on (during setup, players may choose random civ/leaders or a specific one. If two players choose the same civ, I will discreetly ask each player if they want to change civs without revealing what that civ is to everyone else.) Turn Timer: on (You have 36 hours maximum to log in and make your move. Players are asked to make an effort to play more often than this when available. If a player misses enough consecutive turns without a good reason, he/she may be kicked pending admin consultation.) Turn Limit: none (except for the standard 2050 endgame) City Elimination: none (see section 26-11)
This will be a password-protected Gamespy Internet hosted game from my PC which will be logged on throughout the entirety of the game even if I'm afk, barring hurricanes and other electrical storms (I live in Florida, USA). I will email the password of the game to you before it begins. I need potential players to provide their email addy for this and other host-like things to my email at: kingpeterf@comcast.net. I'd like to also remind everyone to password-protect your civ at startup and include your email addy in the player details section in the staging area if you want to recieve an automatic email telling you when it's your turn.
My ladder/gamespy name is spelled like this: Colonel_Treize I hope that covers everything.
To sum up, in order to join just send me an email to kingpeterf@comcast.net from the addy you will be using, telling me that you have Warlords and are ready to play!

I think a good time to begin would be on Sunday, August 6 at high noon (12:00 pm) EST. If you are not available at that time but still want to play, you can take a random civ. But please still let me know ahead of time of your interest because I have to set the number of players at the start. Thx. As your humble moderator and host, I will personally hold myself accountable for the fairness of this game. I realize that as I am also playing I cannot be considered by all to be at all neutral, but I will pledge my short lived reputation in this august group on my impartiality, for what it's worth. Thank you ahead of time for your trust in me.

Nine players now, including myself: WarningU2, conquistador45, Necrominous, thectrain, whiplash, Tony, stin, IanDC and Colonel_Treize. Anyone is welcome to fill the other slots between now and the start time, which should still be on target for Sunday at noon, EST. Let's cross our fingers that Tropical Storm Chris misses South Florida.

I don't want to be "that guy" but I'll be away this long weekend (in Canada anyway) to play in a softball tournament (Go Samsquanches!) and won't be back until sometime Monday. Aye, don't hate me.

Necrominous is back in our game. We now have a new player from Australia joining us. That makes ten players. That means we have players from the US, the UK, Australia, and Canada! Because of the time zones, however, the game may move slower so I am going to change the game speed to quick (230 turns).

Also, I'm changing the turn timer to 36 hours to accomodate some players who can't start till Monday.

Ok ... I've installed Warlords and updated Pitboss. Just to confirm we join a pitboss game like any other right ?
We will see it listed in the lobby or do we direct IP to this at noon on Sunday ?
Please email details.
I have no preference for civilizations.
I prefer no barbs.
And from what I'm reading above one of the players will be absent on Sunday so I presume we will just be starting and the game will pause at that point ?

To sum up, folks: 1. You join a PitBoss game just like any other. 2. It will be hosted in the Gamespy lobby. 3. The game to look for will be “The Colonel’s ladder epic game,” not to be confused with Sanders! (I hope that name is not taken by tomorrow ) 4. Up to three players have informed me that they may not make their first move until the following day. Here’s how it’s going to work: the following civs are reserved for them on a first-come, first-served basis: Hayuna Capac, Mansa Musa, and Elizabeth (by request). If you start at 12:00 EST, please don’t take one of those civs if you want a random civ. Those civs are reserved for the fashionably late (you know who you are). 5. Since some players are starting late, there will be a delay. However, there is a 36 hour turn timer so the show can go on. 6. So far, there is a tie on the Barbarian vote between vanilla barbs and no barbs 4 to 4. IanDC, the deciding vote is yours (no pressure!). If you abstain, I will cast the deciding vote. 7. Finally, I’d like to remind everyone to password protect your civ and put your email address in “Your Details” in the in-game menu to receive a reminder email when it is your turn. WarningU2, if you are reading this, I tried to send you the password via email but it was blocked. Please give me access so I can send you the pw.

i was stuck on finiahing screen for like 5 mins 2 times, i will chck it out in like 2-3 hours and report back.
The first time we tried it worked and laoded in like 20 secs, so im not sure whats happening.
but if the turns are not sim moves the game can take 36*9*230 = 4300 days, thats like 11 years, which is totally stupid!
Sim moves is like 9 months which is perfect!

I apologize for the technical difficulties. There are bugs in the PitBoss that still have to be worked out. We knew this was a test-run. We have no control over the loading issue. I had the same difficulty loading. However, the third time was the charm and the host is back up, running fine and proper.
We are now using sim turns for the game.
A PitBoss game does take a long time. It will take days, maybe weeks. But definitely not years.
Your calculation, 36*9*230=4300, (which is actually [36 hours *10 players*230 turns]/24hours per day=3450 days) is based on the assumption that one player will take one turn each 36-hour period.
With sim turns, the calculation is [36 hours*230 turns]/24=345 days. Indeed, this figure is what scares most people out of playing PBEM and PitBoss games. However, this figure, too, is based on the assumption that each player will take just one turn every 36 hours. With notification reminder emails it is possible to make several turns per day.
You have to remeber that PitBoss was designed to be played by people from many time zones at once. Indeed, it is perhaps better at this than PBEM. However, the game style is not perfect. I don't want anyone to be discouraged by this form of play. The sucess of an individual PitBoss game depends on how dedicated the players are. This requires a different kind of commitment than regular epic games. Instead of having to free up several hour blocks on the weekend, players are encouraged to check on the game for just 5 minutes several times a day. The more often everyone logs in, the more turns can be completed.
Enjoy! CT

The game has now started...waiting for those of you with passwords....first turn. I think there are still a few spots open. Email the colonel to find out. When you join for your first turn choose the civ you have been given/chosen and password it. Then take your first turn...oh dont forget to leave your e-mail in the options/details menu, so you will get e-mail notification of your next turn....32 hours before timer runs out on first turn, or everybody/all civs have taken their first turn..... Thx

With 10 players i know it impossible to make everyone happy, but with my opening warrior i moved to a hill and there is ice and thrundea in all directions 5 tiles of each, with more to follow i can tell and it is the only direction i have land in!! Yes is did settle because there is Ice for atleast 10 tiles if i move!
I will continue for the good of the game although AI will probally do the same kinda stuff, this is a kinda lame game for me.
When i was in there I noticed Mali and Inca did not play there turns, if any of them do not do so in the next 30 hours maybe i can play them?
But on a side note this is a great way of playing PBEM, 100 times faster and slow enough to think about your stuff!

I got a bad cap too...tundra and ice...atleast i got a few resorces ......i think im cut off from most of mainland by mountains. Time to tech for galleys... . Simultaneous moves...so all must move before the game can advance to the next turn.......the civs you saw not played yet, are players who couldnt logon until tomorrow. Two of them I believe......

hey col i have a question... how are you hosting 24-7? You have 2 computers that can both run CIV4?

Post by coloneltreize on Aug 7, 2006 12:56:13 GMT -5
nope. Don't need to. I logged in as brettlighthorse (my old standby ID) to run the game and I use my ladder ID to play.
brett is logged in 24/7 as the host. If I didn't do it this way, I wouldn't be able to play my own game at all , let alone leave it on 24/7 since both IDs would have to be logged in at once. Also, the PitBoss requires a different .exe file than the main game which makes it possible to play Warlords and host a PitBoss game. They designed it that way precisely so you can keep the PitBoss running 24/7 and still play Warlords.
And as for your start, I've heard four people say the same thing, including conqui and myself. See this as a challenge to make the best of a bad situation. Look at it this way. If you get a bad start in a longer game like this, you have a better chance to turn defeat into victory, as well as more time to think about overall strategy. Tony, you're a super diplomat and I'm a Mature Orangutan, remember? It's all good.
Ladderites, as of now, all player slots have been filled. We are waiting on TheCTrain who posted here that he would be late.
Also, the "anonymous" bug persists past the staging area. Sorry, but there is no way to avoid this. If you log in the game and choose another civ than your own, you can sometimes see the person's ID. Unfortunately, this changes as you log in and out randomly so sometimes you will see the ID and sometimes you won't. Eventually, all ID's will be known by everyone if they look. Previous epic games did not have "anonymous" so we'll just have deal with it like they did.

I’m sorry but this game is not working out. I will host a new Direct IP PitBoss for just five dedicated players (including myself) on a first come, first served basis with a 12-hour turn timer. It will start at a time convenient for all five players to play for a 2-hour session to begin. I realize everyone’s inbox is full of these updates. As a result, my MSN account is active and will be used to coordinate this new game. The ID is kingpeterf@comcast.net. I’m sorry if this excludes any of you, but ten players are just too many to coordinate a successful PitBoss. For those of you who planned to invest a lot of time in this game, your investment will be rewarded in the new game. Thank you for your participation, all.
