TBH i personally dont see the skill in OCC! When it first came out it was something new and fresh and no one really knew how to play it, so everyone was was trying to outhink each other, but now that everyone knows the single best way to play and there definaly is a singe best way of playing it. Every game is the same!!!
Even the tech path is the same every game, rushing for war based units is completely reckless, because the guy thats going for the growth and science techs will probally get the war techs a couple of turns after you anyway. By the time you march your stack to the enermy the sentries have seen it and you are greeted with way superior units. You dont even have to think about civic choice, it laid out for you even before you have launched the game.
Getting over 1000 bottles of science is not skillful IMO, just depends on how much food you have, and if you managed to get a little bit of luck. (liberism, getting scientist when 70% chance, etc).
Maybe im misssing something, how comes this is still so popular? Why do some people almost only play OCC? Simple souls?

You still can lose an OCC while going only for science. Happens to me every 3rd OCC to die, because my neighbours prefer to build a warchariot per turn instead of a library.
On the other hand you cannot win when you only go for early war. OCC Cton is about teching and not dying. The game style you comment Tony is always peace OCC. That would be decided only by food and luck.

lol its not always peace OCC, i never even played always peace. I think i been playing long enough to know the diffrence between a regular OCC game and a always peace one.
But my piont is if you have sentries you have plenty of time to build units, also the maps are massive, inland standard for example has huge spacing. Also rushin somsone if effectivly like killing yourself, very foolish IMO, partly because it so easy to counter and partly because youll be last in science and when your fighting tanks muskets, it not the best situation.

OCC is less tense than most teamers and due to my Liking the ODD Guinness now and then whilst playing CIV 1 city is enough for me to micro ;D

how comes this is still so popular? I like OCC games for several reasons, although I don't exclusively play them. For one, OCC is manageable on a blazing timer for people like me with slow computers. But my favorite reason is that I do not have to spend the entire game answering to micromanaging 'team' players about why I am building or not building something or put up with annoying map pings because someone sees a scout! I find that there are several strategies as well, especially if nukes are NOT banned and enough turns are allowed. I don't think I have played a game yet, where someone didn't send an army. And while its absolutely land dependent, Id say that a teamer is as well. Can't tell you how many teamers have been lost because the person who gets zulu has bronze in his capital, and his teamte with egypt plants on horses, etc while the other team doesn't have a single player with metal or horses.

130 turns, ren, standard hb_inland_v2, low sea One of the best plots of land i've ever laid my hands on. I outscored second place by a little under 300 points.

Well, in a 6 player 140 turn REN OCC without internet or nukes I killed all of the other 5 players with 17 turns to spare No bad given the map was standard HB inland sea. Those including ..A..Kazache, rbg, magic_jesus and [KC]Mygoodfriend or some such nonsense and last some newbie (so making hims 2nd).

Best OCC archievments. I played today a player who pm me he got a new C4F_InlandSea_V2 map in a ladder OCC reny duel After approx. 20 turns I quit cause he killed my explorer with cavs. As he got no pw on his civ i reloaded the save, took his civ and now a screenshot from his town: Yes , this is a nice OCC archievment for my opponent after approx 20 turns with a reny start. Unfortunally i got with my civ and city only a normal standard start BTW, I got in addition 2 settlers from start and used only one being fair. Looks like this map wasnt realy properly tested before

I see hes using 17 peoples as sci ... and in 20 turns he have all specialsts joined cite... but 3565 bakers with 17 sci + xx spec = HARD looking on yelow spec bar its say 168 per turn hes above on 500 points to gain specialist. Then he got 5 or 6 specialist but he had all types of specilaists joined cite. In 20 turns for that many joined specialist its imposible to growth in 20 and had that many tech. Lets say 17 people-sci + 2 sci-spec = 3565 bakers im confused ... cheating

Did this guy have "MOD**" at the start of his name? Obviously this kind of silly science is not possible in OCC, neither is such crazy hammers ... after iron works his capital is going to be making 1000 hammers.
400 gold a turn? So much food, without working food tiles?
If he didnt have MOD at the start of his name, then either:
a) This guy has found some great, master-undetectable cheat. b) Something fishy is going on here - in the past some people have been known to invent such stories, but a screen shot has never been produced.
