I'd like to know people's thoughts on the somewhat recent debate between Jon Stewart and Jonah Goldberg (author of Liberal Fascism).
As you might expect I really like what Jonah has to say. I love to see history thrown in the faces of liberals who think that they can just manufacture their own version of history as they go along. A better history, a history that vilifies those who have stood in their way in the past. A history that can disassociate them from the mistakes of their past, in order to give more credibility to their current agenda. The truth is that the socialism that liberals offer is nothing new, it has been tried again and again throughout history. Only the wrapping paper is new. The truth is that the Nazi party in Germany was radical left, not radical right. It wasnt until Hitler turned out to be a really bad guy that American libs tried to distance themselves from him.
(this doesnt mean that modern liberals are nazis, I didnt say that, but I think that in many ways they are fascistic, and in almost every way socialists)

Jon Stewart - 1, Jonah Goldberg - 0
Sorry, but Jon Stewart made the guy look pretty stupid in the interview.
I haven't read the book, but based on the opinions that I tend to have, I'd probably agree with most of what was written. However, Goldberg did a bad job of defending himself here and didn't have good responses to the points that Stewart made.

The interview is edited by Jon Stewart and his minions. Stewart even admits this at the start of the version that he put on his show. Do you think that Stewart would put a high priority on making sure that Goldberg's position is clearly articulated in Stewart's edit of the interview, or.... do you think that Stewart would place more emphasis on his snarky sarcastic comments that earn lots of laughs. The total interview is 18 minutes long, and Stewart only played a little over 6 minutes. His claim is that it was to long to play in its entirety on the show. I will accept this explanation, when the total interview is released on YouTube, or the Comedy Central website. Until that happens, I will strongly suspect that the other 2/3 of the interview was something that Jon Stewart does not want seen.

I just did a little research and I see that you are right. I knew it was edited, but I didn't know they took out 2/3 of it. That's very fishy. I respect Jon Stewart and he loses a lot of credibility with me here. I would love to see the rest of this interview.

I think Jon Stewart is a funny guy. I have a dry sarcastic sense of humor, so his brand of funny is my brand of funny. The problem isnt so much that he gets involved in politics. Its that he gets involved in politics and says serious things and asks serious questions, but tries to make it funny. And then whenever he gets called on it, whenever he is shown to be disingenuous, he backs off with his hands in the air and acts like its only a comedy show. It is one thing to make fun of Bush's public speaking skills, you cant help but laugh at some of the things he says, Bush is like the layman's president, no nonsense, no nuance. And he trips over his own train of thought sometimes. It is another thing entirely to actively propagate the idea that Bush is a liar, and then fail to back up that claim (however jokingly made) with hard evidence. In reality he is a political pundit who uses the Daily show as a crutch to shield himself from the responses of those whom he defames.
Jon Stewart went on the show Crossfire and told them in his best serious voice that people like you (the co hosts of crossfire) are ruining America. His position is that people like them are divisive political hacks for their respective parties. When the Crossfire hosts attempt to respond that Stewart in his own way is no better, and that he is a pundit for the left, Stewart predictably responds that his show comes on after a show about puppets making crank phone calls. Stewart is funny, but he cant have it both ways. If he is going to engage in political discussion seriously, than he has to be able to back up what he says. The stoners watching the daily show choose not to make the distinction. They will go out and vote for Barack Obama, because Barack will make a Daily show appearance, and Stewart will toss him a few soft balls while they both laugh about how stupid conservatives are.

Yay more McCarthy-ism from a fake conservative aka a bush neo-con. It still baffles me that you supposed conservatives back Bush. If anything, he's the fascist (ex: wiretapping). Yeah liberals like the security of a little bit of socialism - a) universal health care; b) Social Security (though it needs fixing!); c) etc. That FDR guy and his New Deal was a great socialist Jon Stewart is a lefty, but I think he's an equal opportunity jokester. I recall many Clinton jokes.... Also CapitalistPig... If you didn't have people like Pat Robertson, W., Bill O'Reilly, Ted Nugent, etc. then there'd be no jokes about "how stupid conservatives are." Merriam-Webster Online: fas·cism Pronunciation: \ˈfa-ˌshi-zəm also ˈfa-ˌsi-\ Function: noun Etymology: Italian fascismo, from fascio bundle, fasces, group, from Latin fascis bundle & fasces fasces Date: 1921 1often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition 2: a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control so·cial·ism Pronunciation: \ˈsō-shə-ˌli-zəm\ Function: noun Date: 1837 1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods 2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state 3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

You are right on the money about Jon Stewart. People like you and I think for ourselves so we can watch the show and take it for what it's for. Often I'm laughing so hard I'm crying by hthe end of the show. However, like you said, stoners and hippies who use bumper stickers and talking points sent down from their heros (like Al gore) to express their opinions watch this crap and eat it up.
Yes, Jon Stewart does attack both sides. I have heard him on more than one occasion criticize democrats. However, these are usually soft balls compared to the .55 caliber bullets he's firing at the republican party. It's obvious where he stands and he doesn't deny it.
Hey, capitalist pig, if you like dry humor like I do, you should check out Flight of the Conchords if you haven't. They are a two person band from New Zealand. They do comedy routines with their folk-like music and have a show on HBO about living in New York and trying (and failing badly at) to get gigs and a fan base. It's very very funny. They wrapped up season 1 in November and the finalle is Emmyworthy. HALARIOUS! Todd Barry is in the finalle. He's another comedian who has a dry sence of humor.

By the way, in case you didn't know, I'm the guy that's your coworker and stayed up all night arguing politics with that Kool-aid drinking liberal and got yelled at for being too loud.
