I'd like to see a Russian history book where it says that the Japanese offered surrender months before Aug 6, 1945 with only condition being safety for Hirohito. I do know that some Japanese attempted to enlist the Russians as intermediaries in negotiating surrender terms; but that went nowhere as the Japanese were losing the war badly and had no leverage. I doubt that any firm surrendor offer reached the US.
If that offer would have been made I'm sure the US would have accepted it. Besides, the Japanese ended up surrendoring unconditionally anyway and the US allowed Hirohito to remain as "cermonial" emperor.

Don't be stupid, you'll not find it in history books. History books are written by winners. You're not a 5 year old child so you should realize it. Anyway, read this www.ihr.org/jhr/v16/v16n3p-4_Weber.html

Ok, I read it. I also did some research on the source. The Journal of Historical Review was published by the Institute of Historical Review. You can read about this "organization" here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institute_for_Historical_ReviewExcerpt:
The journal, History Teacher, wrote of the Journal of Historical Review that the "magazine is shockingly racist and anti-Semitic: articles on 'America's Failed Racial Policy' and anti-Israel pieces accompany those about gas chambers... They clearly have no business claiming to be a continuation of the revisionist tradition, and should be referred to as 'Holocaust Deniers'." (History Teacher, Vol 28, No.4, p 526)
The journal has halted publication since 2002 however, due to "lack of staff and funding", according to the organization's website.

That only proves that it's a non-official source of information that is likely to say something that is contrary to official position and so will not be spoken by others. I don't understand you, do you really that naive to believe that in USA your government, CIA etc. really says you the truth? I'll not believe a single word from officials (or anyone who conveys official position like schools, history books etc.) as long as there is a contrary point of view that is backed up by a more reliable sources of information like known official documents and memoirs of certain people who held positions of power. P.S. Well, memoirs may be trusted only when people say that they were wrong (like in this case). People tend to try to convice themselves that they were right so if they say it memoirs are not reliable as well.

Rumor in Canada is the Russian were about to invade northern Japan, they had them on the ropes. The Americans worried that the communist russians already had so many newly acquired satelite states decided to bomb before Japan could be conquered by Russia. I could be wrong but the hypothesis sounds plausible.

I wonder how many died in those air raids mentioned in Ellestar's link compared to the number that died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If the US were "bombing them back to the stone age," just how much is 4500 tons of incendiary bombs dropped onto their capital?
