Techs give a flat amount of points depending on their era; they're divided up into four or five different eras and a later era tech gives more points. Population gives points proportional to the actual number of "people" in the city, which you can see if you hover over the city size inside the city status screen; i.e. going from size 20 to 21 gives many more points than going from size 1 to 2.
Land gives a flat amount of points per square covered by your culture. The amount of points is determined by the map size; the smaller the map, the more points. Wonders give 21 points per I think, if I recall properly. That goes for both world and national wonders.
If you want more exact numbers trawl Civfanatics, I forgot where I've read about these things but I'm sure it's on there somewhere.

Hm. I just had a quick test of population against no. of citizens (if that makes sense), on a DUEL size map. I had read something about it before but this is how it came out. Then I had a look at how many more points each xtra citizen gave.
1 citizen = 1,000 population 2 = 6,000 - gave 26 more points 3 = 21,000 - 25 points 4 = 48,000 - 26 points 5 = 24 points
Growing from 20 to 21 also gave 26 points.
I did the same on a small size map and once again each extra citizen gives 10 points no matter what the original city size was.
Well this seems to go against what you and I both thought elledge.
It seems each population point is giving roughly the same number of points.
So at the risk of giving something away here, it is much more profitable getting your small cities to grow, simply because it takes less food. Also planting late game cities simply for growth becomes even more profitable in a sense.
Farming over the cottages in ur cap is perhaps less of a good idea.

OK Tamijo. I've been really interested in this for a while too. This is what I have found by fiddling around in Wordbuilder.
This is for standard mapsize:
Each population point gives 6 points.
Each tile covered by your culture gives roughly 3 points.
Techs give the following number of points for the various eras:
Anc = 7 Classical =13 Medieval = 20 Renaissance = 27
I didn't check but presumably it continues to increase by 7 each time.
And each wonder (world or national) gives 22 points.
Interesting stuff. Well I find it interesting anyway.

Thanks a lot
I did not know that nationnal gave points at all (never forget to build the early ones)
I thought it was important to grow capital (from now on cottages and mines !)
Great job thanks
