Hi all. I joined the ladder a few days after Civ 4 came out. Since then, everytime I go to the lobby, I ask if anyone wants to do a ladder game. Every single time, I get no response. I also see no area of the forums for setting up games, just the PBEM and Tournaments. Where can I go to get games setup? With the homepage saying thousands of games are being played, I must be missing something... Redly

Hi there.
Yes unfortunately with the lobby being such a piece of crap, alot of ladder players are making games via YIM or whatever, which is of course a pain if you don't have it. I have managed to get games in the lobby it's not always easy and you may have to wait for an hour. Try hosting your own game and call it Ladder whatever, just because no ones answering doesn't mean there's no one there, they could be afk etc, they may pop in see no games and pop out again. If they see yours they'll likely join. Players are more than willing to advise on how to set up the game if your unsure at first.
I happen to be lucky in that I played c3c and know alot of the names from there, so I can get an idea immediately if there are any ladders around. Once the game is patched the lobby should see a flood of players emerging from the woodwork so bear with it, gl and hf.
BTW it took me three days of trying each evening to finally get a ladder game. It might be nice if some of those people who are hooking up games via YIM popped into the lobby to allow the new ladder players a chance to play, it's stable enough to advertise your game ip via individual lobby chat/pm, hell I was in there for 30 mins the other night without a crash. Just a thought.

Oh and whiplash, if you see this now go into the lobby, I'll be there in a moment. That'll be two ladder players in there at least

Redly look at games with ladder in their names. Sort game by name and u will found it. Also watch on icon if game is passworded or in progress.

Hi. Thanks for the responses. The reason I'd rather "setup" a game, rather than join one in the lobby, is because I'm a rather poor player. I'd like to get a match with someone with the same skill level at first. I've played about 10-12 multiplayer games so far, and have always ended near the bottom score-wise. (well "ended" is a bad word since I've YET to complete a game without people quitting...). Sad thing is I have the strategy guide and have read it from cover to cover. Redly

I'd like to play someone with the same skill level as me, but unfortunately waiting around for someone who's as inexperienced and noob as me would take forever ;D. Your best bet is to try a teamer, that way you can learn about the game with a few experienced players, hands on advice in real game situations is far better than a guide will ever be. Best way to learn is to play with better players or against them. Sure Like me you'll get your arse kicked but hey it's all good fun. Just played a 4v4 it was great fun went all the way to the end even though we were behind from the beginning, not the slightest suggestion of a quiter or of conceding for that matter. One of the big pluses of the ladder very few quitters, and if they do it regularly, good luck finding a ladder game, word of mouth can be quite damaging.

aye. I too have wondered how to find matches. looking for ladder games in the lobby seems a little... inefficient... as confirmed by sidhe's statements about waiting 3 nights to get a game going.
isnt there a forum thread called "Game Starts" or something? shouldnt there be? it would be a great way to arrange games. players could set a date and time a few days ahead and people could sign up.
of course that precludes the "I want to play this instant!"-people and you never know if something gets in the way, but still... I would like such a thread... maybe I'll just throw one together...
another issue. I was wondering. timezone-wise. where are most players located? is this a mostly american ladder? as I live in central europe this might not be the most practical ladder to be part of if I have to constantly adapt to EST.
could anyone clear these issues up for me?

The two biggest time zones for peak games are Eastern Standard Time in North America, and CET/GMT in Europe. This is defenitely not just an "american" ladder. NA and Europe are the two biggest area's but there is also a Australia/NZ/Asia segment as well as other mixed regions in between.

I agree it's very frustrating getting started. I've been trying all night to get into a ladder game. I finally did once, but they didn't believe me that I was a member & kicked me out. Maybe some of these players aren't as friendly or polite as the website claims they are. Or maybe I'm just overreacting, either way I've wasted hours trying to get in one.
BTW Redly, or anyone for that matter, feel free to look me up on Xfyre if you want to play a match. My tagname is bfguttlecraw.

Maybe some of these players aren't as friendly or polite as the website claims they are. Looking at the ladder news about nick changes, i presume that you "forgot" to mention that your gamespy nick wasn't the same as a ladder nick. So, obviously noone will believe that you're a ladder member if you don't follow the ladder rules and don't keep both nicks the same. P.S. And finally, don't blame others for problems you created himself.

That's actaully not true. I read the all the rules when I signed up & made my ladder ID exactly the same as my gamespy ID, character for character. So I don't know what their reason was for booting me, I was only in there long enough to answer yes I'm in the ladder & then I was booted.

You don't need to D/L Gamespy Arcade, the reason we mention GS ID is that Civ4 is "powered by Gamespy". Just use the Civ4, "create account" in the MP menu to create your Civ4 ID, ofcourse it and your ladder name must be identical. Arcade doesn't support the Civ4 lobby, so most of the time using the ingame lobby interface is fine, but the odd time you need to access the lobby from within the game there's a lobby access program at www.civ4fans.com I recommend that you take advantage of this program as well.
