This should be a thread with tips on small things that you usually dont think over. Here is some stuff I relearned yesterday (just started playing again) that is not that obvious:
Financial does not give bonus when you plan on a river with a commerce resource. This gives you 3 commere with any civ. You do not get any bonus commerce if you just plant on gold, it has to be a river too.
Also it seems gifting units that got xp from vasselage to a friend who isnt in vasselage (unconfirmed) will make that unit loose the vasselage xp. (if you dont promote before gifting) I had a longbow with 2 promotions ready that i gifted and then it was 3/2 xp instead of 5/2 when i looked at the unit inside my friends border. If anyone can confirm this this would be nice.

This is great trick that i picked up ... When you have someone that is making your team lose keep calling him a noob until he quits, and they get a upgrade.

Settling on plain + food resource does not give your city 3 food. Settling on grass + food gives 3 food in that city.
Financial civ + gold and river = 3 commerce None financial civ + gold and river = 2 commerce.

This is rare but did happen to me the last medieval game. It was 5v5 and I was a front player, meeting opponent on turn 1, so I settle immediately.
My capital has one single big farm with 3 food, ALL other tiles has 2 food. With a single 3F tile, I can work on 1 hill (0F4H) and has 1 food left for growing, or no hill with 3F left for growing.
My front city does not have a single hill and has two 3F tiles. Workshop at this point will take 1 food away and add 1 hammer. I slave to a point that no citizen is working. How do you work this kind of sh*t?

You shouldn't get yourself into that sort of situation, what map is it that you only have river grassland? but i imagine farming, hereditary rule and slavery would be the only option.

Great wall actually adds 100% bonus to sea battles too (for great general bonus) So even if sea unit is outside of border you get the bonus. With imperialistic 3 xp = 15xp. Thats a pretty good bonus and I think imperialistic is very valuable for this fact.

Something Ive learned over time with close enemies is to plan your chopping carefully. Look at your city and decide if you were choking, where are the choke points. eg forest hill next to cap. Then chop that 1st.
If you have time chop all forest next to your city. If you have a lot of forest and cant chop most of it before enemy get units to you then try to cut a line so he has to move into open.
Also if you want to chop before working your food then chop a tile next to food so you can move and work food the same turn.

From marr: Hoovering over a tech that gives free X great person will show if someone has got it or not. If it still reads "first to get x gets free x great person" then its still not gotten yet.

Couple of small things: - use your tech advisor to look at the tech tree during game, you can actually click on a tech that you want and your tech path will be set up to get you there - but don't aim for a tech that is too far advanced or it will take you there by the most direct route - which isn't always the fastest route. - to 'ping' a teammate, type the letter 'p' and move your cursor to where you want the ping to show.
