What do you usually do with these guys? For example, on ren teamers I often see the general used to make one super-duper cavalry or unit, maybe for heroic epic. Wouldn't it be better to take 20 knights/cavs with 7 exp (easy with barracks, stable and theocracy), upgrade them all to 8 exp then dump them on a charismatic civ? 20 knights/cavs with formation seem a lot more useful than 1 super duper ultra unit. This way you can stay in bureaucracy and get level 3 units easily.
Still not sure what's the best use for them in ancient though.

I think the great general was a great addition to Civ. He's pretty versatile and the best use for him really depends on the situation. This medic 3 promotion is really popular and justifiably so, that's some powerful healing qualities. Also that brings the unit up to heroic opening up the heroic wonder 4 u (and ur friends). In anc it really depends. Most people will use it on a unit just cos it's fun. However adding what is effectively a forge (military academy) to a unit producing city is pretty neat in short MP games. But personally I prefer using GGs as instructors. Bumping up every unit from a good city to the next xp level is pretty invaluable. Having said that adding a GG to a unit can tip the balance in some battle, so it's obviously worthwhile. E.g. I once added morale to a catapult and was able to double move a city with just a spear in whilst I attacked his other front. And a medic 3 unit in a stack is a kinda must have now . Haven't often used him to spread xp among a stack like you say, but it's a good idea. It can be a kind of cool way to heal a stack though.

If it's Ancient and early in game, I like to add the first GG to the main production city as a specialist. Sure better than having Godzilla the Great Archer. Later on I just love doin' the Warlord move on a mega stack. The only problem is applying the promotions in the heat of battle. Anyone else have this problem? Trying to get the benefits of healing/promotions on many units while in combat - my poor brain starts to hurt cuz I'm missing the action...

in anc, i usually add GG'S to a city that i produce army more often.. especially if i am not aggressive, its very useful having units with 2 level like u r in theocracy...in early stages it s a big advantage though...

Always use it for acadamys especially in anc but depending on game situation it depends what I use it on,
very rare I bother with a general though unless its modern eras

great generals are not new to civ - they just brought them back "with a little more purpose" and I think it's great.
personally, I equate the current "great general" system to the "power pill" in the old "arcade" games such as super-mario brothers.
In the next add-on, mod, x-pak, C5 etc, I'd like to see them do more to the "great generals"
i.e. increased happiness city cap after a first victory with the general (hero worship)
i.e. increased happiness in the rest of the cities with his second victory (national recognition)
i.e. change from "great general" to "HERO" status (equivilant to GP) after third victory; and the HERO can complete/rush a wonder/tech/building (as in one of the previous CIV games)
and when the general is killed? DECREASED happiness (below that before the benefit of his victories) for a few turns, then happiness level changed back down to what it was pre-general.
(and wouldn't it be fun if a great general could become more popular than his civ's leader and take over as the leader of the civ as are many cases in history? the general would gain all the "traits" of the original Civ Leader PLUS "no military cost," etc etc etc)

In a Ren Teamer I usually like to use my first General to make a super unit so that everyone can build Heroic Epic. That is a huge bonus in unit production that shouldn't be ignored. After that it all depends on how the game is going and what strategy will help you best to win.
