I have just started playing (and enjoying this era). i am still ultra newb but learning all the time. i just thought i would throw this open and ask that anyone offer some bits of knowledge or ask some questions.
i played my first ind. cton last night and got caught out towards the endwith a heavy stack from lporignialg. with around 50 turns to go i had been building factories in every decent mfg city. but it seems to me this was perhaps not worth while. they are expensive to build and u only reap their benefits for a limited number of turns. having said that if it was ancient nd i got metal casting 50 turns from the end i would build the forges.
also it would make sense that the best early attacks are with grenadiers (bonus versus riflemen - u get three rifles at the start) and some catas.
u start with three settlers. these of course move faster than riflemen so if u move straight to the city site ur explorer has helped find and then plant it u are defenceless for a few turns and at the whim of a marauding rifleman. or in my case yesterday a redcoat . i did get my rifle in in time but i killed his explorer first ( not realising a redcoat was coming straight after). so he killed my weakened defensive unit to take the city. lol. after i failed to quick move a second rifle in there. but i was thinking even if i did get a healthy rifle in there, he would still easily lose. doesnt this make england seriously over powered for this era. it can pick off newly founded cities at it's pleasure.
well i've gone on quite a bit. i would mention one more thing. iron is v important. may be even more important than for reni. u need it for cannons ( tho these are soon replaced by artillery), frigates and (i think) galleons. u need oil bad for air units, destroyers, battleships and tanks (correct me if i am wrong). unfortunately i didnt live long enough for these units to come into play.
it would be great if some peeps who have played more of this era could post here.
thx church.
p.s. oh and this is real important. thx to mookie for this. change ur civics straight away as in any late era. i thought the best would be the following, but this is just my opinion:
representation, bureaucracy, serfdom, mercantilism, organized religion (may be theocracy if ur not spiritual)
in every city ur free specialist will be a merchant - u start with a market in every city and this is the only building that gives a specialist. change this to an ordinary citizen, put a forge in the city then change from citizen to engineer. great engineers are much more useful. they get certain useful techs. one can rush taj mahal. and two can rush the staue of liberty or the pentagon. so this would seem to make philisophical civs very handy indeed
woah i said too much.
end.
