Lets say i would donate 1000usd as prize to the winner of a Tournement.
is that ok by law, and would such donated Tournements be accepted.
lets say the donator makes up the rules, and the Admins sets a Td on the task to set it up. a Sponsored Tournement.
allso this will set grounds for future Sponsore ment of players. and Tournements that are Sponsored by others than privite persones.

That would be fun, not sure if it would be allowed. Oh, and also... why would you donate 1000 dollars to a computer game tourney???

Someone could make a mod more suitable to the big companies...you could found the Macintosh religion, for example. Or maybe different units. The lawyer gets a 100% bonus against the customer. The stockbroker causes collateral damage etc...

Sounds like a logistical nightmare. I see it now.
All players must be 18 years or age. Making receipts for income tax purposes. Paying duty on prize winnings. and so on.....
Nice ideal but if done it would have to be independantly somewhere with entry fees etc etc so that gaming licenses can be bought and Lord knows what else.

Americas laws are based on ours But with perhaps a series nod towards extreme capatalism and beureacracy. Oh and a smidgeon of religion and political correctness thrown in with an eye on avoiding litigation. Gambling is illegal in the UK for all but penies and licensed establishments. You actually think anyone takes much notice, or the police particularly care that much? If playing poker for a few notes is a crime it isn't much of one. No BEER no TV Make Homer go? Crazy? Don't mind if I do! I think a prize would be a good idea, just get someone to set it up in a country with a more liberal view of gambeling and there'd be no probs.

I don't think it would be illegal in the US. Is it any different from Professional Boxing or the PGA or NASCAR? As long as it's a game of skill and not purely chance people can legally compete for cash prizes.

First, I wouldn't want to be involved in all the arguments and disputes involving a money prize tournament. You think complaints about RNG, drops, bad starting position, etc. are bad now? Wait till $1000 is involved. The arguments would be a nightmare.
Second, every possible cheater would be drawn to such a thing. With that much money involved, there would be more than enough incentive for people to cheat in various ways, I'm sure we could all imagine.
Third, as an organization we've consciously avoided all monetary issues so we don't have to file taxes and various other government forms we would have to be involved with if we handled money.
Personally, I play this game for fun. I think most of us feel that way. I don't really see much likelihood that a PCPA (Professional CIVILIZATION Players Assocation) will ever be formed. At least for now, I'm not giving up my day job.
Best, SPM

NO PCPA ?!?! ... damn, SPM ... you should have said earlier, nearly chucked in studies as I got CIV ... ... OK, maybe study has suffered just because I played too much, this game is simply too addictive and should be blacklisted as "JOB-&TIME-KILLER" and maybe as "MARRIAGE-KILLER" too (my wife would say)

A gunfiight involving the dead mans hand

What do you mean "like it was". Today, in some circles if you are caught cheating, you're dead.
But seriously, this would be unmanagable.

There is a place that can help, i'ts called civanon. There's a link to it somewhere on the civ3 forum
